badnewsbeers (1026), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA May 14, 2006 pathetic for an old ale...actually looks and tastes like a scotch ale; dark reddish brown brown body with no head...aroma of roasted notes, some caramel, some brown sugar...flavor is same with a earthy and somewhat grainy backbone..thin watery palate...not terrible, but not an old ale msutequilaman (84), Troy, Michigan, USA Apr 26, 2006 Brown, ugly looking stuff with no head. Smelled intriguing, but tasted like piss water. Maybe a bad bottle, but I would not try another. AlchemistZ (493), Richmond, Virginia, USA Mar 14, 2006 Borderline opaque, dark brown with red hints and a very thin, tan head. Aroma of milk, sweet chocolate, spicy alcohol, and rich toffee. Flavor has smokiness underneath, creaminess, nice alcohol, a balancing roast, caramel, chewiness, but not an extremely great combo of flavors. They have water problems. jsquire (2086), St. Marys, Ohio, USA Feb 7, 2006 Dark reddish beer with only a whispy off-white slick of foam. Dark ripe fruit nose. Flavors of burnt toast, dark caramel sweetness, some chocolate, with a long bitter finish of grass and grapefruit rind. This is an interesting beer, and not bad for an end of evening sipper demitriustown (689), Shelby Township, Michigan, USA Jan 2, 2006 Pours almost opaque black with a small brown head. Nose is caramel, faint notes of roasted malts, small back notes of citrus fruit. It’s a rather subdued yet enjoyable aroma. Taste consists of brown sugar, nice caramel overtones, dark chocolate, prunes, kind of woody, and rather bitter. Nice carbonated long bitter palate. I really liked this Ale subtle aroma, taste that packs a punch, and nice palate. walleye (876), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA Sep 18, 2005 from the bottle. poured a deep mahogany with a small light tan head that didn’t last. aroma dark fruits, raisins, plums, came out nice than got brown sugar, caramel and a hint of malt. flavor a little on the weak side compared to the aroma, but did get those dark fruits and malts and some cherries, was a little on the chaulky side. like some of the other raters was surprised at the alcohol content couldn’t smell or taste it. tiggmtl (4307), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Sep 2, 2005 Roasty, grainy, herbal, fairly smoky aroma. Opaque brown body with low tan head that recedes slowly to partial cover and ring. Fairly sweet brown sugar, some fruity esters and smokiness with some grainy malt flavours. Dry, medium body with low to fair carbonation. Sampled at the Michigan Brewers Guild Summer Beer Fest 2005.
jtw (942), farmington, Michigan, USA Aug 9, 2005 what exactly IS an old ale...? anyway this tastes like a scotch ale, with caramel, peat, roasted barley accenting a mostly crystal-malt tasting body. decent, but won’t blow you away. 9% is nowhere to be found, definitely worth a shot.
