muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA Jul 30, 2005 Sampled draught at the Michigan Brewers Fest. Still motor-oil hue with a tiny ring of head...chocolate-covered raisins dominate the sweet, lightly smoky nose...body not much beyond brown sugar and water, alas, really falls apart, syrupy and bland though at least the alcohol isn’t noticeable...doesn’t really work at all in the end despite some beginning promise. Rastacouere (5551), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Jul 28, 2005 Limited head covers the clear deep brown body. Fairly simple nose proposes mostly bready malts with a brown sugar, earthy and vegetal tweak. Very sweet in mouth, juicy raisins soaked with rummy dates-like alcohol. Light-medium body, moderate carbonation, rather dull. TimE (1300), Tokyo, Japan Jul 26, 2005 One dimensional sour apple, earty nose. Virtually no-carbonation with coffee, chocolate mouth. Malty chocolate finish with a low amount of bitterness. willblake (2160), Belcamp, Maryland, USA Jul 20, 2005 07.08.05 RBSG Medium brown pour with no head. Nose is toffee with milk chocolate, raisin. Flavor in line with aroma plus some coffee, raisin, and hazelnut. Alcohol totally hidden. Walt (2289), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 12, 2005 Pour is dark caramel color with no head...smell was vanilla with lots of cream soda and root beer notes (along with the appearance)...taste was mildly sweet like a prune juice up front with bitter coming on quite strong in the finish...9%??? asheft (1374), Marburg, Germany Jul 11, 2005 [bottle at RBSG]
Clear, orange-black like diluteed coca-cola since it had a very thin, wispy head. Butterscotch aroma with some grapes and creamy vanilla and just a hint of Amcerican hops. Very strong hops come out in the flavour, though, that lead into a medium to high bitterness. The flavour is dry with a butterscotchy caramel finish and lingering bitterness. Light body with moderate carbonation and almost a clean ending. I would have never expected so much alcohol. Brad (364), Berkley, Michigan, USA May 26, 2005 Bottle: Cloudier dark brown on the pour, head appeared rapidly and disappeared just as quick. Definate motor oil type look, with very little carbonation. Aromas of dark dried fruit, rasins/prunes, dark sugars (toffee/caramel), nutty. Flavor was two-waved, starting smooth/sweet malty, with a nice bitterness to offset. I would’ve never guessed this beer was 9%, very well hidden alcohol. SuIIy (1406), Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, USA May 22, 2005 Bottle: Pours a hazy dark brown color with fizzy head. Nose is a bit of caramel, fairly light. Taste is light caramel and lacking in substance. Smooth and easy to drink.
