| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 13, 2005 Bottle. Poured opaque dark brown. Thin tan head that vacated quickly, some minor lacing. Faint malt/nut aroma. Coffee, caramel flavors. Not much mouthfeel. Not bad but not remarkable, either. I expected more from an old ale. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 4, 2005 Bottle: Aroma is very malty, nutty, coffee, chocolate, and light smoke. Pours a dark brown with red hilights when held to the light. Virtually no head, just a small off-white film that disappears to an outer ring. Very malty and sweet up front which turns to coffee and bitterness in the finish. Lingering bitter aftertaste. As it warms, coffee flavor increases. 11026 (1799), Alabama, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jan 31, 2005 Bottle. Deep brown color, chestnut when backlit. No head to speak of. Some lacing. Aroma is malty. Perhaps a hint of leather and smoke. A bit thin on the palate, I was looking for a bit more body. Initially sweet in flavor and then fading to bitter. Nice hopping towards the finish that lingers. Decent, a bit more body and this would be quite good. beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 3, 2004 Leathery reddish coffee black color, not thick set in body but still very dark and rich. Finger high sandy brown head, sits briefly, extremely miniscule lacing.
Beautiful smokey black malt nose with deep, dark, and raspy molasses; has a very deep and dark plummy tang, raw black licorice notes laced with cough syrup ethonal. The smokey charred aspect in the aroma is wonderful, a nice display of smokey and dark charred tang...I really liked smellin’ this. A bit out of the realm or norm for an Old Ale, but great non-the-less.
Taste is just as nice as the smell, solid black malt temperament, roasty, smokey, charred, tangy, with bits of plum and black licorice, leaves a nice little smokey dark nuttyness and left over charred flavors near the finish where it drys out with a welcoming cocoa dusted effervesence. Not as thick, bold, or rich as I hoping it would be after encountering the aroma. But once it starts it keeps enough interest in flavors to partake more consumption.
Feel is about medium, quick and slick front, a bit more creamier midway to finish. Smooth, smokey tang, subtle dry finisher, partially chalky though. I thoroughly enjoyed this stuff! A bit off for the style I think, but enjoyable all the same. Different and likeable.
