| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 3, 2004 Leathery reddish coffee black color, not thick set in body but still very dark and rich. Finger high sandy brown head, sits briefly, extremely miniscule lacing.
Beautiful smokey black malt nose with deep, dark, and raspy molasses; has a very deep and dark plummy tang, raw black licorice notes laced with cough syrup ethonal. The smokey charred aspect in the aroma is wonderful, a nice display of smokey and dark charred tang...I really liked smellin’ this. A bit out of the realm or norm for an Old Ale, but great non-the-less.
Taste is just as nice as the smell, solid black malt temperament, roasty, smokey, charred, tangy, with bits of plum and black licorice, leaves a nice little smokey dark nuttyness and left over charred flavors near the finish where it drys out with a welcoming cocoa dusted effervesence. Not as thick, bold, or rich as I hoping it would be after encountering the aroma. But once it starts it keeps enough interest in flavors to partake more consumption.
Feel is about medium, quick and slick front, a bit more creamier midway to finish. Smooth, smokey tang, subtle dry finisher, partially chalky though. I thoroughly enjoyed this stuff! A bit off for the style I think, but enjoyable all the same. Different and likeable.

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 2, 2008 This one poured a very very dark amber with little head. It smelled very sweet, perhaps of apples or even citrus. It went down smooth and finished very citrusy and hoppy. I would definitely recommend this brew and definitely have it again. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 22, 2004 Had this following a Maitresse du Moine. 2004 bottle. Pours a coppery-red/orange, looks like a deep IPA. Smells bitter yet juicy, plenty of floral hops. My 3rd or 4th Old ale, and none have been remotely alike. This one was almost like a double IPA, though not as much caramel malt. The hops variety they used was particularly enjoyable, had a real earthy/mossy appeal, with a fuzzy texture. Lots of alcohol, not terribly complex, but fairly balanced, though somewhat on the drier/bitter side. Pretty good stuff I thought. walleye (879), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 18, 2005 from the bottle. poured a deep mahogany with a small light tan head that didn’t last. aroma dark fruits, raisins, plums, came out nice than got brown sugar, caramel and a hint of malt. flavor a little on the weak side compared to the aroma, but did get those dark fruits and malts and some cherries, was a little on the chaulky side. like some of the other raters was surprised at the alcohol content couldn’t smell or taste it. 1FastSTi (2557), Glendale, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 13, 2007 The beer pours to a really dark mahogany body with a thin off-white head. The aroma is pretty decent. Winey and grainy mixed with tobacco and barley. The flavor is roasted coffee and barley with some sweet chocolate. The hops finish well. The palate is medium bodied with a nice smooth texture. I’m beginning to think this beer is either good or really bad. Perhaps some problems with quality control (see Joel’s rating). demitriustown (694), Shelby Township, Michigan, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 2, 2006 Pours almost opaque black with a small brown head. Nose is caramel, faint notes of roasted malts, small back notes of citrus fruit. It’s a rather subdued yet enjoyable aroma. Taste consists of brown sugar, nice caramel overtones, dark chocolate, prunes, kind of woody, and rather bitter. Nice carbonated long bitter palate. I really liked this Ale subtle aroma, taste that packs a punch, and nice palate.
