4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Kestral (494) - Årnes, - SEP 19, 2011
Tap at Grünerløkka Brygghus. Dark, hazy reddish brown, with a frothy beige head on top. Aroma is filled with hops, smells green and fresh and juicy. Grass, grapefruit, tangerine, weed, and light bread, caramel, chocolate and coffee. As expected, it’s got a solid bitterness, with a tiny burnt sourness to it, and a hint of bitter chocolate, coffee and roasted notes in the finish. It’s still a lot about the hops though, grassy and citric hops galore. Well balanced. As the previous ale I had from Kinn, Slåtteøl, the mouthfeel is so smooth and soft. This one could perhaps have had a tad more carbonation. It’s listed as an amber, but it felt more like a big, well-hopped brown to me. And that was basically exactly what I wanted that moment.

Cask @ Grunerløkka Brygghus, Oslo. This is a dark murky bastard with a thin bubbly beige head. The aroma is mild, light fruity, hints of roasted malts and perhaps even some smoke? Anyhow, quite nice. It has really soft carbonation - almost what one could call flat actually - and the mouthfeel is kinda slippery and slack. Good lightly burned and smoky flavors mixed with some dark ripe fruity notes and nuts. Quite malty and it has lots of nice malt sweetness before you get subtle hints of chocolate and cocoa in the finish. Yeah, I quite liked this, even though I don’t see myself drinking a butt load of it in one evening. Really nice stuff and a perfect autumn warmer.
