Svartekunst er vår versjon av Foreign Extra Double Imperial Russian Export Stout Porter. Kolsvart, røstig karakter og med litt vinøse tonar.

Bottle at home. Black pour, almost no head. Aroma of loads of licorice, black malts, some brandy, ash, bread and a hint of sigar. Flavor is immensly black bitter roasted, a bit thin and with low carbonation. Out of balance, but quite interesting. Lingering bitterness for ages.

In short: A roasted and woody imperial stout that is surprisingly drinkable.
How: Bottle 250ml at Hanne På Høydens, Bergen Norway, 2011 vintage
The look: Black body topped by tiny beige ring of foam
In long: Nose is very roasted, burnt wood, coffee beans, sweet dark fruits, barrels. Taste is very roasted, chocolate cake icing, strong coffee character that is somewhere between fresh roasted coffee beans and cold cup of black coffee, dirty old wood, cocoa. With all that roast and wood astringency there is a rather low sweetness sensation and absolutely no alcohol presence. I’m not even sure that this is barrel aged (I can’t read this description) but I did get some wood/barrels in this beer, if it is the case then this is a well integrated barrel aging that really doesn’t overwhelmed the beer. This is a superior example of the style. I must be gifted with foreign languages because I only spent a few weeks in Norway and already I can tell that F.E.D.I.R.E.S.P. is an acronym and not an actual Norwegian word.

Deep brown body, almost black, with a small brown head that leaves some lacing. Stunning aroma! Intense dark roasted, dark berries, black currant, dark sweet caramel, coffee and chocolate. Medium sweet taste with a heavy bitter finish. Lot’s of alcohol, but it sort of fits the intense aroma and intense flavours, although it makes this remarkable brew a little less drinkable. But I guess you don’t pick an imperial stout if you want a thirst quencher a hot summer day. Flavours are coffee, dark caramel and dark berries. Full body, oily texture and soft carbonation. I can’t wait for the next incarnation of Svartekunst.

DArk, not much of a head. Lovely nose - coffee, liquorice, salt. Surprisingly light body. Salt liquorice dominates the flavour, I miss more compelx elements. Still a fine beer.

On tap at Nærbø Ølfestival. Looking gorgeous this one, with it’s big, dense, light tan head soon diminishing into a finger-thick layer of cream leaving lacings. Black body. Licorice, roasted malts, some burnt notes and coffee, as well as a pleasant touch of dried fruits and alcohol in the aroma. The flavor is nicely sweet, with coffee, licorice and some burnt notes. Dried fruits and a touch of alcohol too. Full-bodied and supersmooth, definitely deserving a 5 on the palate score. Lots of roasted style bitterness and some hoppy bitterness in the end. A bit warming in the end maybe, but certainly a beauty. 111022

250mL thanks to my Norwegian Secret Santa. Pours deep brown to black in the snifter tulip. Medium, dense tan foam. Thick formation and retention. Nose is sweet prunes, dirty earth, wet swamp, soy. Can’t really get into this aroma. Taste is richer dairy, milk chocolate, heavy mousse and whipping cream. Ooo very yummy. Chocolate silk pie. Excellent hoppy balance. As it warms, off flavors in the nose subside to reveal pue crust, dark chocolate mousse, brown liquor. Wow this baby opens up. Switched glassware from skinny snifter tulip to oversized Southampton RIS snifter. Wow this is smelling great- super rich ganache, dark chocolate mousse, muted bourbon and coconut. Wow. Still smelling sweet with rum baba dessert. A very temperamental beer but the palate is dense and filling. Huge dairy cream character. Taste as it warms becomes richer and richer melted dark chocolate. So bitter and rich. This was an experience!

Served as a sample at Nærbø Ølfestival last year as a exclusive world premiere. Dark as the night with a small brown head that disappears wuite fast due to the high alcohol. Roasty aroma with coffee and chocolate as the main elements. The taste also reveals some leaves, coal and a tiny bit of smoke. Oily texture with low carbonation which really sets the taste in the main seat. A fantastic beer in my opinion, would really recommend to buy this one if you get across it.
