2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
This Kirin Stout pours a thin black and is topped by a persistent cappuccino colored hear. Decent amount of lacing.
The smell is very minimal. Whisps of coffee and chocolate with a metallic edge.
The taste is light and bitter with a slight metallic finish. Hints of coffee.
The mouthfeel is very light with a small amount of carbonation.
Overall, this beer is ok but nothing special.

35cl can in HK. The beer starts dry-roasted, fresh. Nice sourish roasted hints. Fresh and easy to drink, but nice roasted with bitter hints. Not too deep, but round. Not too sweet, nice.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Can from The Japan Centre, London. It pours deep brown with a decent tan head. The nose is toasty, bitter-sweet, rye bread and chocolate. The taste is bitter, toast, earthy roast, cocoa, mild acidity, light soy sauce and liquorice with a short, dry finish. Medium body and average. Simple stout action. Drinkable enough.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Can from Citysuper on the 6X to Repulse Bay. Aroma is roasty and a bit chemically. Taste hints at stout flavor of roasted malts and chocolate but more empty and bland. Not that good.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Can from Citysuper, drank on bus to Repulse Bay. Burnt malt, flavour somewhat sharp and flat, quite fizzy finish. A bit like cola + burnt malt/coffee.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Can from konbini. Pours almost black with a frothy tan head. Aroma is roasted malts with a hint of chocolate. Chocolate comes through more in the flavour, a little more watery and carbonated than I would have hoped for, but very drinkable for a standard macrobrew can.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
One of the most common dark beers in Japan, available even in ordinary eating and drinking establishments. Good choice to have if all the other beers are usual tasteless fake lagers. Pours dark brown with a small head that dissipates fast. Aroma has some watery roasted malts - but only a bit, some not so pleasant vomit aroma also there. Taste is actually quite nice. Mouthful of roasted malts. some dark chocolate and dark fruits giving way to even more chocolate in the somewhat sweetish-dry roast aftertaste. Mouthfeel is a bit watery, subduing tastes and aromas, not too powerful. However, at a Japanese restaurant with no craft beer, this one will do nicely.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Can from my local supermarket for 200 yen bought in honor of Stout Day. Served in a stemmed glass it has a big rusty tan head that vanishes fairly fast leaving a thin film behind. The aroma is savory dark pitted fruits, a bit roasty with some coco powdery chocolate notes. Medium to light bodied with quite a vibrant carbonation a bit more lively than the silkiness I want in a stout. The taste is actually pretty good chocolate, a bit roasty, some savory notes & maybe a hint of smoke. Easy drinking and approachable. Nowhere near as good as the bottled Asahi Stout (best value beer in Japan in my opinion) but pretty good for 200 yen from a major brewery. It’s balanced yet flavorful. Give it a shot if you haven’t yet.
