Coppery brown with rich, malty character-this perfectly brewed amber ale gets its good looks from the dark-roasted crystal malt that we import from England. To give it some Western flair, it is moderately hopped with hops straight from the Yakima Valley in Washington. ABV 5.7% Bitterness 25 IBU. Contract brewed for Costco by the Gordon Biersch Brewing Company under the brewer name Hopfen Und Malz (for the west coast market) and since mid 2009 by Matt Brewing as "New Yorker Brewing Co." (for the east coast market).

Aroma is nutty with hints of caramel and smoke. Dark copper color, fairly still. Taste is nut filled pastry with coffee, with peat and wet hair on the side. Stale oat aftertaste tarnishes an otherwise smooth palate feel. I knew right away that this was a Matt product.

Bottle from the local Costco. Pours a clear darker amber color with a moderate off-white head on there. Nose is malt-dominant, with some toasty caramel in there. Taste is toasty and slightly bitter, which surprised me, and almost no residual sweetness.

Tea and chesnut nose. Tea colored, medium tan head. Mild nuttiness, barley. Fairly clean despite this being an old bottle. Not bad.

Somewhat malty aroma with some soapy notes. Not a complex beer but enough malts to make it drinkable.

Pours dull brownish amber with a foamy off-white head. Aroma is malty, floral, slightly fruity, with a bit of toast, nuts and vanilla. Taste is floral, malt, light stone fruit, some caramel, and hop bitterness. No actual hop aroma or flavor. Finishes a bit thin and the bitterness lingers a little too heavy. A bit of a weird chemical taste? A super malt-leaning pretty boring amber.

12oz. Dark amber brown, foamy offwhite head. Dry cheap malt, sour amber. Wattery, creamy body. Sour malting. Not terrible

Best by: 10/27/11 A: pours amber with brilliant clarity and a single finger of creamy head which falls to a broken sheet of the same. No lacing. S: Sweet malts. A hint of bitter hops. Really syrupy smell. A small amount of chemical astringency. T: Sweet, malty. Really no character to this beer. Tastes like the Pale Ale, which tastes like the IPA, which tastes like the Amber. M: Medium body with moderate carb. O: whatever. Great to have around the house for people you don’t respect (in-laws). Serving type: bottle 07-08-2011

33 cl bottle, Calgary, AB, Canada. Light mahogany colour. Metallic soapy aroma. Sweet caramel flavour, herbal hops with a slight breadiness. Finishes with a mint hoppiness.

Drank from the bottle while burning brush at night. Some hop bitterness caramel, dry finish. A decent amber.

Bottle. Light amber color with very small off-white head, caramel aroma, fizzy, very little hops taste, almost tasteless. Finishes abruptly with no palate at all. I am guessing that this could be a perfect blind tasting specimen, no one could find out what it was!

This was easily my least favorite of the Kirkland beers. It seemed timid, flabby, and it had an unappealing, astringent finish. Some hints of caramel and wood, I suppose, but all in all it was a miss.
