Bottle from local Yamaya. Malty aroma, yeasty, light plum notes. Dark copper-brown, 1cm beige head. Tangy initial, mid palate sweetens, final is malty with a little bitterness and some yogurt. Thin-medium body. Tasty enough, but the heavy yeast gets in the way.

Bottle on the Shinkansen. Mediciney nose, but the mouthfeel was decent. Fairly light, but somewhat soft and creamy. Roasted flavours of malt, biscuits, berries and caramel all apparent. Pretty damn sweet. Not unpleasant company on the train.

On draught at the brewpub, served way to cold and improved after a big hug. At coolish room temperature it was an OK Alt, if a bit spineless. Claims to be all-malt and I can believe it. Needs more hopping.

Theis (12778) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - OCT 6, 2009
Bottle in train going from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima. Clear amber – white head. Dark bread, caramel, light roasted notes, berries, light fruity notes, sweetness, light syrup, sweet malty, light hoppy, grainy. Rather sweet but nice and drinkable.

Draught at the brewpub. Clear amber, small head. Salty and slightly roasty, light to medium bodied. Lightly bready or roasty that clears the sterile feel. Salty bitterish finish. Competent, but lacks soul.

Tap at the brewpub. Light amber color. Slight caramel aroma and flavor. Very light, with an overall dryness that comes not so much from hops as from a ack of sweetness. Decently made but uninteresting.

Amber with a tan head. Sweet aroma. Fruit, caramel malts, herbal, Very sweet flavor. The malts completely mask any sort of hops. A touch of toasted malt and some yeast that makes me think sake. It’s not a bad beer at all, but very pedestrian.

My Bottom Line:
Caramel malt colours their toasted compadres throughout in this straightforward, creamy and near hopless Altbier.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam laces around the glowing amber.
-The finish is rather toasty, with a yeasty touch.
-This one feels very professional too, like all Kizakura Kappa beers, but its recipe is too formulaic to really grab me.

On tap at the brewery restaurant.
