Wulfstan (481), California, USA Feb 11, 2008 Updated: May 1, 2008This is very nice. It is a deep gold with a thin bu long-lastin white head that leaves some decent lacing. The aroma is very nice, being yeast with strong, nutty grain and hints of herb and citrus. The taste is a full-bodied malty, toasty, nutty grain with bitter herbal, piney, and slightly citrusy hops that lightly dominate the beer nicely, through to the finish which is a nice blend of bitter herbal and piney hops with nutty grain. The flavour is strong from start to finish and the body is fairly thick and oily. eicolque (3), , Alabama, USA does not count Oct 19, 2008 Great beer, golden appearance, malty flavor, great balance, great texture. I love this beer. omhper (11030), Stockholm, Sweden Apr 7, 2002 Deep golden coloured. Grassy aroma. Medium bodied, dry, slightly fruity, very bitter. Maybe the best balanced and most flavourful of the Czechish 14% lagers I have tried. noelcb (271), Toledo, Ohio, USA Apr 3, 2005
Dark, amber with lots of bubbles. Had a head in the bottle immediately after opening. Poured with a decent dense, lathery head. Very strong roasted malt flavor with good hop bitterness and notes of fruit, especially lemon, nuts, and coffee. Aroma is apple, pear, flowers, herbs, slightly metallic, but pleasant.
Unusual in that this is Czech but not a pilsner. The Klaster brewery makes mainly this and a dark lager. According to them they use Saaz hops and pilsner yeasts. Yet this beer is dark and even pours a little hazy. Perhaps its the aging they do. If the recipe really dates to 1570, there must have been some happy monks in Hradiste nad Jizerou!
THIS IS NOT A PILS!! Why do people insist all Czech beers are Pils. This LAGER is dark and cloudy, with flecks of sediment from bottle aging. That is not a Pilsner! Oakes (7047), Miami Beach, Florida, USA May 23, 2002 Amber; thick head; aroma drips with Saaz. Full body, big biscuity malt profile, fat hop tang - big & balanced.
