rederic (1787), montréal, Quebec, Canada Oct 15, 2009 500ml bottle, dark brown color, with a fluffly tan-colored head, yeasty, toasty, caramel, biscuity malt, nutty chestnut nose with some cookie dough, toffeeish, dried sultana, date accents, with some mild chocolatey aromas follow through on a medium-bodied palate with a toasted, caramelized, mild roasted malt character with some toffee, nutty, light chocolatey, coffee flavours, with a light caramel, chestnut butter accent, leading towards a malty, nutty, lingering roasty bitterness finish. AWS9 (222), Mississauga, Ontario, Canada Apr 27, 2009 Bottle. Pours dark copper gold, no head to speak of. Interesting mix of roasted malt and nuts, with hints of spice. Flavour dominated by roasted malt with a pleasant bitter finish. Additional traces of spice, nut, chocolate, honey. A brown ale made interesting for a change. JesseM (661), Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Nov 17, 2008 341mL bottle courtesy of matt7215 (thanks Matt!). Pours a very dark brown with a nice, but small tan head. The aroma is very rich, dark roasty malts and lots of chocolate. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say this was a porter. No nuts to speak of though. Flavour is again very rich, lots of chocolate sweetness with a firm malt presence, but balanced well with some dry astringency in the finish, which is the only thing resembling nuts in this beer. This really is more of a porter to be honest. A very good beer, but totally advertised wrong. matt7215 (942), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Sep 28, 2008 341 ml bottle from The Beer Store. pours deep brown with a lovely tan head into my session mug. aroma, well there isnt much to tell. chocolate is the main aroma with some other sweetness but the aroma is not very big and sometimes hard to find. the flavours are what make this one a winner. big chocolate upfront with sweet nuttiness right behind. not complex at all but well crafted for fall brown ale pounding. surprisingly better then expected. RaphaelN (195), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Sep 20, 2008 Bottle thanks to a friend. A very potent flavour of coffee - but not the good kind. Seems to me like somebody dumped in a few tablespoons of Tim Horton’s in there. Taste was decent, but not all that appealing. That malt and coffee profile was too overpowering and really took away from the enjoyment of the beverage. I give it two thumbs down. sinkhole (176), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Jan 24, 2008 Pours dark brown with a minimal off-white head. Aromas of roasted malts and nuts, carries through to the inital taste. There’s a slight caramel sweetness as well. Overall the flavouring is too subtle and watered down though to be considered more than average. MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Aug 26, 2007 341 ml bottle- This one pours deep bronzed brown with some transparency.Tiny bubbled head is short lived. Malty, caramel aroma is mild and is mixed in with some hops, and a touch of molasses and coffee. Nutty sweet flavour is a touch watered down, coffee, some milk chocolate. This one has potential, but the finish is too thin and watery. JohnBarleycorn (390), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Feb 3, 2007 Pleasing deep-brown seeps to blood-red around the edges. Short-lived head. Tantalizing aromas of milk chocolate and coffee with lots of sugar. Medium-bodied flavour leans heavily on the coffee accents, swelling towards the middle and ending with a burnt malt medium-length finish. Successfully rides the middle between drinkability and savourability. One of Ontario’s better darks.
