Ernest (4189), Boulder, Colorado, USA Mar 3, 2008 Bottle.
Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting.
Body is dark brown.
Aroma is lightly malty (caramel, cookie), moderately yeasty (cheese, sweat), with notes of spackle/paint and hair spray.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Medium to full body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic.
Truly horrific aroma...some sweet malt, yes, but the rest is positively scary. Stinky cheese and various stomach-clenching chemical odors. I really didn’t want to put any in my mouth, but oddly it didn’t leave a disturbing aftertaste (still, not much to balance the sweetness, so it doesn’t really save it). Not like any Imperial Stout I’ve had either (aside from the aroma). So I dunno...maybe just a terrible yeast strain and some higher alcohols at fault? First experience with this brewery and sadly a very very poor one. Total drain pour.
bitbucket (1528), Kirkland, Washington, USA Aug 5, 2008 750, thanks after4ever! Pours clear but very dark brown with a scant tan head. Chocolate and caramel aroma. Medium body. Taste of chocolate, caramel, oxidized apples and figs. This seems to be the more-or-less standard Belgian translation of RIS. Not bad, but not really a Russian Imperial Stout - sort of an acquired expectation for me now. Black and opaque. Some bright corners here and there. Rich chocolate and roast on the nose. Mild body. Very approachable and easy drinking. Mild finish. marcus (933), Sacramento, California, USA Jul 27, 2008 This dark brown ale poured with a modest tan head and a caramel aroma. There is a carbonated roasted malt flavor with lots of chocolate and prunes. The taste is not very pleasant. Bockyhorsey (1933), Mesa, Arizona, USA Jul 27, 2008 750ml bottle. Aroma of dirty lake water. Caramel body color with dirty white head. Odd flaovr got some coco but was dry and had the taste of a cigarette filter. Some junk left on bottom of glass gave it a dry roasted aftertaste on palate. Beer was somewhat complexing to me anyway
