Zwart & Straf Winterbier

Carbonazione esagerata. Una birra poco gradevole...

Bottle. Black oily pour. Aroma of licorice and anise. Taste is really sweet, with caramelised malt, licorice, anise, red fruit and yeast. Thick, sticky mouthfeel. Nice, but too sweet.

33cl bottle. The brewer states: Black and Fierce. And so it is. A strong coffee beer of high alcohol percentage, with great taste. Bitterness and sugary sweetness combined in a perfect caramel, chocolate ale.

Bottle. Deep brown body with a frothy brown head, mostly lasting. Aroma of molasses, roasted grain, char. Notes of overripe fruit, plum, anise, alcohol. The flavor is heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium to full body, velvety texture turning syrupy in the finish, lively carbonation. A bit muddled. Tastes of roasted malts, licorice, dark chocolate. Didn’t especially like this at first sip, but thought better of it by the end of the glass.

Bottle at home. Black pour, creamy tan head. Aroma is spicy, roasted, sugary malts, licorice, bread and some alcohol. Flavor is quite bitter, sweet sugary malts, licorice and with a smooth texture. Quite heavy brew, slightly messy.

11.2oz bottle. Really digging this one. Opened with a gush, beware. Opaque brown-burgundy body. Creamy, steady beige head. Some vinous sour over sweet, somehow delicate chocolate malt tones. Perfect balance between the sour tones and the deep amber chocolate malts. It almost smells like Rodenbach..wonder if it is just infected? The vinous nature of the sour yeast cuts through the deep malts, making this quite drinkable to me. Very nice beer, one I will certainly revisit....at the same time this could be infected...
