Zwart & Straf Winterbier

Black, which makes think it's a stout. The white head clearly tells otherwise. The nose is fresh, lots of anise. Taste is rather flat, some raisins, chocolate and anise again. Which is such an odd spice to use in beers imo. Totally not fond of anise in beer.

Bottle @ sbwf13. Dark brown, thin off white head. Sweetish, spicy aroma, yeast. Flavor has elderberry, mild sweetness, hops, floral notes. Decent.

Dark brown colour with a minimal frothy off-white head. Aroma is sweet roasted malt and yeasty, hints of chocolate and dark fruits. Flavor is pretty much the same as aroma but with a strong alcohol presence. light to medium body and light carbonation. Alcohol finish.

Pours deep mahogany into a snifter. Mocha head with good retention recedes to coat surface. Toffee and anise aromas dry with dark it fruit and chocolate front to back. Lasting bitter earth finish.

On tap at Monks Kettle. Pours pitch black with a modest tan head and a chocolate and treacle aroma. There is a full-bodied dark malt flavor with a smooth chocolate finish. Very tasty.

How: Bottle.
Where: A store close to the castle in Gent.
Appearance: Dark brown colour with a tan head.
Aroma: Liquorice, dark fruit, roasted malt.
Body: Full bodied with a good carbonation.
Flavour: Dark malt, liquorice, chocolate. Mild, slightly bitter, finish.
Comment: Surprisingly enjoyable. Maybe a boat ride on a warm day isn’t the best place to enjoy it fully, but it still tasted nice.
