Zwart & Straf Winterbier

Licht rokerig. Zoet gaat over in bitter. Medium body, medium co2. Palet is niet veel bijzonders.

Aroma:
Slight/medium aroma of malts, caramel, Belgian yeast, dried fruit and liquorice.

Appearance:
Turbid/opaque ruby/dark brown beer with heavy yeast and with a slight/medium beige head.

Taste/Palate:
Medium/heavy sweet with malts, caramel, Belgian yeast, dried fruit and liquorice.

Overall:
This beer is intense, complex and balanced. The aroma is rather weak however and the palate could have been better. The flavour is great despite all this!

Bottle 33cl. Poured into a chalice. Deep ruby brown, small foamy tan head, mostly diminishing, lacing; aroma sweet malts, roasted, anise, licorice, dark fruits, brown sugar, light chocolate; taste light heavy sweet, slightly bitter, roasted malts, chocolate, sugary, spicy notes; in the middle part roasted malts and light fruitiness, spicy accents (cinnamon, anise, black pepper), alcohol joins towards the sweetbitter roasty finish, chocolate and coffee notes; full to medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation; heavy duty beer but well-balanced and complex.

Just a little too sweet but nice and warming. Flavors of overripe prunes and raisins. Maybe mid july isn’t the best time of year to drink this, but again they have shown they know how to brew. Bottle from De Zwart in Wilnis.

dark reddish brown colour, one inch creamybeige-ish head; aroma of dried plum and figs, anise, cocoa powder, earthy and floral notes; taste of dried plum, raisins, anise, some chocolate apple and herbal liqueur; almost like a quadrupel - really good!

Bottle. Wait, the brewers’ _aim_ is to "promote Turnhout as a world wide centre of the playing card industry"? Pretty much black with a cm of tan head that lasts well. Oranges and lemon stick out in the aroma with slightly funky dough, licorice, prunes and spices less unexpected. Not that sweet but moderately doughy with plenty of prunes and other dried fruit. Subdued chocolate. Quite heavily spiced with some citrus peel too. Alcohol sticks out a bit at the end. Interesting beer - can’t see a date but feels like it could come together a bit over 18 months or so. At the moment things are complex but not well integrated.

From a 330ml bottle on 19/4/2016. Pours an extremely dark brown with a biggish uneven head. The nose features dark fruit, booze and Belgian yeast. Taste wise, it’s quite sweet and very plummy, with some raisins, with hints of spice and chocolate. It’s earthy, a touch sharp and has the typical Belgian yeastiness that you’d expect. The texture is thick with slightly fizzy carbonation. A decent, boozy sipper which lacks a bit of subtlety and refinement for mine. Just not the type of beer that blows my hair back.
