joss (3108), Garching b. München, Germany Jun 6, 2003 Slight burned cocoa aroma.
Ebony brown, massive brown head.
Burned coffee and cocoa in the taste and a with a bitterhop finish.
This schwarzbier actually has so much burned flavor that you are temted to compare it to a stout or porter. This is however not what you should do in my oppinion; it should be compared to other beers of the same style and here it is safe to say it overall is one of the most flavorfull Schwarzbier. schuim (36), Netherlands Nov 22, 2004 A very fine dark beer. The aroma and flavor have some coffee and chocolate notes in it. Almost a smoke flavour but I think it is only dark malt. MartinKubert (862), Copenhagen, Denmark Nov 3, 2003 Ah! What a nice possibility to try this beer! Mads L. brought it back from Bamberg and tasted it 10th of june, while I first tried it now... Please, Mads, next time spare me some...? You selfish asshole!
Nice dark colour, beyond ruby, close to black. Small head, fine carbonation. Aroma combined by tobacco, smoked malt and somewhat similar to oregano. Need start, dry flavour with hints of burned malt, bitter chocolate and maybe orange shells? Palate somewhat bitter butterscotch? and smoked malt. Nice balance through the brew. diabel (1196), Aarschot, Belgium Aug 1, 2006 Draught at the brewey tap Frothy, very lightly brown head which disappears fastly. Fair lace. Clear, black body. Aroma of mild cofee, roasted malts, spices, ... Not a very intense flavour, but it has a very subtle spiciness in it’s roasted malts, which gives this beer a very pleasant and complex flavour. Lightly sweet, lightly bitter in the beginning, lightly bitter in the end. Lightly bodied. Lively carbonation. Mads Langtved (2246), København K, Denmark Jun 10, 2003 As joss, I tend to compare it to a Schwarzbier. In this particular style this is one of the best. Slightly burned (It is from Bamberg of course!). Very complex and roasted. Has elements of a porter with smoked coffee notes and toffee. This is very unusual in a German classic Scharzbier. This is by the way maked in Bamberg and not from Thüringen area like most other German Scharzbiers. The owner (Herrn Robert) told me that they use 3 diffenrent malt types instead of one like the Gold Pilsener.
