[Bottle bought in Bamberg.] Nice darkbrown look with off white head. Notes of sweet light roasted malt, straws, bread, caramel and some sticky carbonation. Great beer!

(6/31/08) Draught at the brewpub in Bamberg. Very dark brown to black color with a beige head. Aroma is quite roasty with some ice-coffee, caramel and some butterscotch. Roasty sweet flavor with some coffee with milk. Medium-bodied.

On tap at The Klosterbrau Brewpub, Bamberg. Black brown with tan head. Quite tarry on the nose, the body is fairly sweet and fruity with notes of plum and prunes. There is a slight sourness in the background but nothing too extreme. It’s ok.

A Mes rate: Gravity serving at Zeitgeist.
Very dark cloudy brown with a thin off white head. Grainy aroma, slightly sour with some spice and toffee. Lemony sourness in the flavour, tangy malt. Ok but not amazing.

From tap sitting in front of Klosterbräu. Dark brown with a creamy head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt with hints of coffee. The flavour has a rather good body, but not nearly as much as many others (Vielanker Schwartz for one). It has notes of caramel, roasted coffee and not nearly as much coffee as the aroma suggested. It develops dry towards the slightly bitter finish.

Bottled (5,2% ABV). A black beer with a very big and persistent light brown head. Malty nose with a roasty touch. The flavour is malty, roasty with some coffee notes and light hoppy notes. Quite rich. Medium body, average carbonation, moderately bitter aftertaste. Near stouty. Nice stuff and another good Bamberger beer.

UPDATED: AUG 5, 2007 Bottle. Near black with a decent beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, bitter chocolate, licorice and oak. Flavour was also roasted, with some burnt chocolate. The finish was long and bitter. very good.

Draught@Klosterbräu, Bamberg
Dark ruby color, big cloudy off-white head. First there is mould and wood in the aroma, when beer warms up - tar and smoke. Woody, barrel-like mouldy flavors, toasted malts, tar, smoke, light milk chocolate. Hops rise in the aftertaste. Personal and excellent smokey Schwarzbier and currently clearly underrated in RB (with score 3.36).

Tap @ Klosterbräu. Aroma is of dark roasted malts, some licorice and has a smoked touch. Clear, dark brown coloured with an off-white, medium, lasting head. Taste is sweet with roasted dark malts and a smoked touch. Bit dry finish.
