Knee Deep’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout is a smooth tasting brew that has big malt flavors and plenty of bitterness which creates a well-balanced, bourbon flavored beer. The barrel aging process gives this beer a spicy, vanilla character with a pleasant and warming finish.

Aromas of intense chocolate, dates, raisins, figs, cacao, dark malts, toffee, charred wood, licorice, aged dark malts, oak, leather and barrel wood. Pours pitch black with a moderately thick brown foam. Taste brings massive dark chocolate, raw chocolate bark, cigar smoke, pure licorice, dry, dry dark malts, thick fudge, raisins, figs, oak, tree bark, burnt sugar and bourbon. Finishes heavy with harsh chocolate, oak, leather, caramel and bourbon. Alcohol is massive on this. Overall, this beer is a monster that delivers an intense assault on your palate. Intense chocolate and dark flavors. Prominent aged malts and big bourbon.

"At first the negatives stood out a little. This beer is a little thin, in look and feel, for the style. But it maintains a small head, and the thin body is followed by such a nice warming bourbon vanilla chocolate finish that you just cease to care. The aroma and flavor are pretty well balanced between the barrels and the beer. In what’s becoming a regular thing, though, knee deep is pricing themselves well into the premium/world class range. Bourbon county is several dollars cheaper than this and there’s a ton of world class stuff as good or better than their hoppy brews for far less. I want to support them but when you price yourself higher than some of the best brewers, repeat business is pretty unlikely...."

Bottle thanks to bhensonb. Poured near black with an off white to tan head. Aroma was coffee, dark roast, bourbon, and a peppery spice. Flavor was lots of roast, bourbon, alcohol, and coffee. Body was a bit thin for me.

Very nice barrel aged beer for Knee Deeps first run. Bourbon aromas, with hints of vanilla, and slight chocolate.

Bomber from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark brown with garnet glints and a slight beige/tan head. Aroma suggests resin. Med plus body. Flavor is resin/citrus, followed by treacle notes, some vanilla and arguably some oak astringency. Overall the flavor is pretty good. It’s like a black IPA rather than a stout. New category! Black DIPA. With time I think a little more something like bourbon comes out. But bourbon flavored? That might be a bit generous. Oh well. It’s an absolutely delicious ale.

Bottle from capitol beer. Color is black with not much of a head. Taste and aroma is coffee. Don’t get any oak flavor. Just a hint of bourbon.

22 ounce bottle purchased at Nugget in Woodland, CA. This is a pricey bottle at $16. The aroma is pleasant with a good deal of oaky, wood character initially. Behind it lies a more of a mocha, coffee like flavor. Almost like roasted coffee beans. Bourbon is rather subdued in the nose of this. If you like coffee aroma, then this is the aroma for you. Very nice. Very slightly transparent dark mahogany body with a smallish, weak, light tan head. Starts with a little bourbony flavoring. Light vanilla in the middle. Finishes burnt, woody, and somewhat ashy. Pretty harsh finish with tons of roasty astringency. Body is pretty thin and light. Would not buy this one again.
