glennmastrange (1888) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - JUN 11, 2012
Bottle. Moderate malt anf hop notes of roasted, caramel and grapefruit peel, light soap for the yeast, with background notes of date, pepper and ginger. Head is small to avergae size, frothy, white with good lacing and is mostyl diminshing. Color is clear light amber/orange. Flavor starts slightly sweet and moderately acidic,, then finishes lightly to moderately acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, a little slick with a lively carbonation and a lightly dry finish. All good, typical DIPA characteristics, just a little out of balance on the flavor. Could’ve had a touch more sweetness.

22oz bomber (kick ass name!), courtesy of deftim13. thanks, tim! pours a clear, deeper shade of copper than most dipa’s capped by a soapy, white head that leaves sticky rings of lace. aroma is great and sits on the sweeter side with notes of candied apricots, peaches, pineapple syrup, and pink grapefruit backed by subtle notes of resin, toffee, ginger, and wet grass. flavor is damn nice as well with a solid, piney, herbal, hoppy bitterness balancing the sweetness from notes of peaches, tangerine, pineapple, and toffee. palate is on the lighter side of medium bodied and may come across a bit watery to some people but finishes with a light sweetness and dry bitterness. overall, a solid, west coast dipa with a great name.

22oz bottle. Golden amber pour with some white head. Aromas of resin, citrus, and pine hops with some caramel. Good amount of malt to back up the pine, resin, and tropical fruit hop assault. Dry finish.

Gold pour with a small white head. Grassy and citrusy aromas and taste is full of hoppiness and sweet malts, finishes dry. A nice DIPA.

To finish out American Craft Beer Week, I’m enjoying a 22 oz. bomber of Hoptologist from Knee Deep Brewing. Grassy and grapefruit aromas start right out of the bottle. Pours crystal clear copper with a white head. The grass and grapefruit follow in spades with tongue biting bitterness. The taste evolves as this warms up and some vegetal notes show up that are very nice too (expected with this level of hop addition). There’s a good caramel malt body that supports all of this juicy hop goodness and doesn’t get in the way. The body is almost creamy which is very unusual for a DIPA. So is the lack of an alcohol bite which makes this a very dangerous beer (I’m glad I don’t have another bottle laying around or I’d be tempted to crack it open). Finishes dry and not nearly as bitter as I’d expect. This is an easy drinking DIPA (oxymoron I know, but it’s true!) that’s delicious from start to finish
