3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
22 oz. bottle, pours a murky cloudy dark orange brown with a medium white head. Nose brings out earthy caramel malts and resinous hops - smells rather old. Flavour confirms this suspicion, with old resinous hops and caramel malts. Thanks a lot for this old beer, Sun Devil Liquors in Mesa, AZ - shameful to sell something this old, especially without a bottle date. Lame.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Amber body, lightly browned head. This one emanates a caramel malted nose that leads to a body has strong toffeeish and caramel malt notes. Sticky hops with a touch of cotton candy.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Treated as an American Strong ale, this was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a dark burnt red color with a thin off white foamy head dissipating at a nice pace and leaving a cap of foam that clings for most of the consumption.
The smell starts off with a sweet bready to caramel malt coating sweet to semi-bitter piney to citrus hops.
The taste was mildly sweet through the hops and the caramel and bready malt. Bitterness from the hops makes an effort to balance but ends up drying on into the aftertaste and finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. Carbonation feels good with a definitely mostly dry feel on my tongue.
Overall, as an American Strong ale, it works. I’d have again.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap @ Knee Deep. Copper in color with an off-white head. The nose is quite caramel and brown sugar forward. Decently hoppy with lots of pine and citrus peel. Kind of grassy, too. The flavor is intensely sweet. Big time sugar, caramel, and fruits. Some bitter grass and pine. Moderate citrus qualities. While hoppy, it’s not quite enough to overcome the massive sugar content.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 11/18/2014. Pours crystal clear ruby red/copper color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, toast, toffee, spicy rye bread, light roast, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good complexity and balance of citrus/pine hops and dark/bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, toast, toffee, spicy rye bread, light roast, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate amount of pine bitterness and rye spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon/orange zest, pine, caramel, toast, toffee, spicy rye bread, light roast, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and dark/bready malt flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, moderately crisp/sticky, and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice imperial red ale style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and dark/bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
22 oz. Bottle purchased at Champanes,
this beer had a dark red pour with a little brown/bronze color, and it gave a more than one finger faint off-white head that lowered a bit to a thin layer and thick ring, there was nice lacing on the glass,
the nose had aromas of citrus hops with a touch of floral and spice notes, caramel and hard candy, a little toasted malt, candy and malt sweetness,
the flavors were malt, citrus hops, hard candy and caramel, faint dark fruit notes in the background, some candy and malt sweetness,
the finish had a good hop bitterness that lingered a bit on the tongue, malt followed afterwards,
the mouth feel was a light medium that was creamy on the lips and had average carbonation,
this was a simple big red beer with a good amount of hops, it was an ok drink.

More an amber than a red, capped with an off-white and gorgeously thick head, this brew from Knee Deep is not ELUDING detection at all, (alluding to the incorrect use of the word in the description of the brew. Shit makes me crazy). The aroma is tantalizing as soon as I crack that cap and the malts are inundating the air around the bottle and glass. They said snifter, I went with snifter.
The first sip is obvious. Caramel. Heavy. I could put this shit in the middle of a chocolate bar and sell it for good money. Wow, the mellow of that malty flavor is absolutely as huge as it is comfortable having it wrap around my lips and tongue.
Creamy and rich, the flavor is beautifully sticky caramel again, and I hate to say that the malts are not even slightly hiding behind the hops in this. I do find that there is a lingering bitter at the back end that I dislike, but it is minimal and doesn’t take away from my enjoyment of the beer. The rye is just icing on the cake and lends its spiciness to the smooth malts to give this beer a satisfying edge.
For as creamy as this is, the carbonation is really good and doesn’t seem to lessen over time. The body of the beer is full of life and although the head makes a sneaky getaway while you’re busy paying attention to the flavor and taste, one quick swirl and a twist of the wrist and it’s looming large again.
Although this is not my favorite from the brewery, if you like a good Strong Ale, you should give this a try.

22oz bomber at the CO-OP. Nice amber/reddish pour with an light brown head that hung around. Nice malty/doughy aroma that was present in the flavor as well. Smooth hop finish that lingers. Pretty decent red.

"Had this one before they started dating their bottles. Shoulda known better. Had obviously been out for longer than I prefer. Nice big caramel maltyness, medium bodied and a touch sticky. Faded hop aroma and flavor though the bitterness is still there. They’ve kinda turned into douches since being called out for not dating (there was session IPAs on display at Total Wine 5 minutes from the brewery, and when they were told their response was not only dismissive but downright rude) so pretty much the only one I buy these days is super fresh Simtra."
