3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draught@Abseits. Golden colour, small white head. Aroma is earth, malts, rather yeast and also has some mild mouldy hints. Flavour is very citrusy and then it has quite much the same notes as in the aroma.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Draught at the brewpub. Clear nut brown, minimal head. Roasty metallic nose. Medium sweet and lightly toasty with rounded mouthfeel. Finishes with metal and blood. A bit too much surface and too little content, more in line with American brewpubs than Franconian.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Golden-brown. Hoppy liquid bread aroma. Toasty and complex with lemony hops....you’d think those wouldn’t work together but they did here. Tasty example.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Malzig herber, etwas erdiger Antrunk, bodenständig. Recht würzig, was einzig auf das Malz abzielt. Gelungen, sehr süffig, der Hopfen ist hintergründig präsent. Gut! 9/11/11/10//11

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at the brewery. Chestnut brown body, clear with a fine white head. Crusty bread / toast malt in the nose with some grassy / herbal hops which show up as a strong green bitterness in the finish, out of balance bitterness even, which is strange to find in Franconia. Lingering bitterness, how did this become a staple here? Leafy green herbalness. Cookie and toast and grassy hops, a fun one for sure. Compare this hoppy dunkel to the malty experience i had with the bottle five years prior, I’m perplexed.
Bottle at the brewery in June 2008: Dark brown color with a tan head. Nose of rich and sweet tobacco, toffee, roast and caramel. Doppelbock-like nose, sweet, lightly alcoholic and fruity. Rich and flavorful toffee and bread crust throughout, very toasty with a faint bit of roast as well. Similar to a porter or stout at times, bready, fresh, and delicious. (3.8)

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
My Bottom Line :
Hazelnut-laced toasted malts converse with spicy, wooden hops in this slender and refined Dunkel.
Further Personal Perceptions :
-A slice of foam decorates the deep copper.
-The tiny but active bubbles and lean sugars craft a sturdy mouthfeel.
-The hoppy finish is quite bitter, more intense than the average Franconian brew.
-This and their Ungespundet Lagerbier are both brews I would drink pints of all the time if I could visit Schammelsdorf regularly.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
At the brewpub, 12 August 2014. Dark brown with a slight, off-white, head. Some toasted malts, a trace of plain chocolate and tart fruits, with a full-bodied, bitter finish. Sweetness avoided throughout and excellent for it.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft at Knoblach.
Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly lasting.
Body is medium to dark brown.
Aroma is moderately malty (toasted bread/nuts, caramel, roasted grain), lightly hoppy (herbs).
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter.
Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation.
Kinda watery, but otherwise quite delightful...rich malt nose and surprising hop bitterness. Very clean and solid.
