Black with ruby edges...frothy tan head...dissipated to rim
Aroma - Fruity dark malts...some soft roast....slight medicinal herbal note...hint of soft coffee...touch of alcohol..quite complex
Taste - Dark soft roasted malts...liquorice...some dark berry fruits....bit of burnt crust...slight medicinal and herbal note...plain chocolate in background...smooth silky...no harsh notes...bit unusual...complex...tastes a bit old-aleish to me
Palate - medium carb...little over fizzy...medium body...quite smooth...soft roast and sweet slight herbal dark malts on palate. Finish.as main flavour...bit dry....some lingering fruity dark chocolate and liquorice...cleans well
Overall - Unusual beer - sort of a mixture of porter / old ale

Home - Bottle, happy as a pig in poke. Yes there are better beers, but this just such a nice little number from a nice wee brewery. Coffee and chocolate not at all bitter....at first, then a subtle kick, lingered on the palate for a while which is good. Deffo drinking now.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Dr_Butty (63) - SCOTLAND - JAN 14, 2012
Fairly new beer from Knops. Bottled from Provenance Wines. Black, opaque, little or no head. Rich aroma, sort of liquorice/coffee. Coffee and chocolate malt with well balanced bitterness. Really very good stuff for a cold winter’s night. Supposed to be inspired by a traditional 18th/19th century Edinburgh brew of the same name.
1.9 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 jvhemert (161) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - JAN 4, 2012
AROMA: barnyard, dough, quite a sour smell
APPEARANCE: black, brown head, forthy quickly disappears
TASTE: lightly bitter, followed by intense bitter aftertaste
PALATE: medium body, slick feel, average carbonation, prickly feel, astringent
OVERALL: do not like the aromas, nor the palate. Not to repeat

Bottle. Dark brown pour, thick foamy head. Nose is big liquorice, blackberry, black forest gateau, milk chocolate. Chocolate, hazelnut, berry palate, hint of vanilla sweetness and a surprisingly hoppy nutty finish. Nice!
