A delightful Scottish beer inspired by a brewing book from 1847 where there is a story about a beer that is clear and very brisk, and, consequently, very agreeable to the palate. Our modern interpretation of this beer uses four different malts (Pale Ale, Crystal, Chocolate and Roast Barley). Hops are added in small quantities in two stages to ensure that the malt character typical of Scottish ales is not overwhelmed.

Clear, dark amber beer. Malt and strong caramel in the aroma. Taste is also a malt/caramel mix and a toasty edge, but not as strong as I expected from the flavour. Itís almost refreshing though a touch "thin" for want of a better word. Quite drinkable though.

Bottle thanks to Palle Ott. Pours brown with a beige head. Aroma of bitter nuts., weak chocolate, caramel and sweet malts. Taste is sweet and a bit bitter with the same notes from the aroma. medium carb and body for the style.

Cask @ JDW Counting House. Clear, dark red with a thin off white head. Taste is malty, dried fruit sweetness with some bitterness in the finish. A little thin, perhaps, but otherwise a good beer

Cask @ Cross Keys, Leeds. Clear brown with a small, slightly off-white creamy head. Bitter with an underlying graininess that gives it a good edge. Not too bitter at all.

Bottle from Beer 52.

Aroma: Slight malt aroma. Thatís it.
Appearance: Almost identical to cola - dark, with a deep red hue. Light head.
Taste: Malts, coffee, and a slight tobacco aftertaste.
Palate: Slightly bitter throughout, with a very dry finish. Light body. Light carbonation.
Overall: A very refreshing bitter. That tobacco aftertaste was odd, but worked well with the other flavours. Iíll definitely come back to this in the future.

Bottle from Beer52. Deep red-brown with essentially no head. Light chocolate malt aroma. Light and malty, easy drinking. Fair and drinkable, but doesnít stand out.

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 5/3/2015. Copper coloured, with a decent, off-white, head. A malty beer, with caramel sweetness, a touch of hedgerow fruit and gentle finish. Fine.

Bottle. Pours clear, brown, with a good slightly tanned frothy head that holds well. Full bodied, very high carbonation, fine bubbles, lacing. Aroma is woody, chocolate and earth. Taste is earthy but not many flavours. Palate is too high carbonation. Finish is poor, crisp. Not recommended.

Reasonable price, amazingly smooth palette, and an uncharacteristically rich malt flavor for a scottish beer. Worth a try.
