drewbeerme (2224), Chicago, Illinois, USA Mar 8, 2008 bottle. pours black with creamy tan head. aroma of oats, espresso, and lots of dark sugars. oaty, brown sugar, coffee, and chocolate flavors. the sugar really reminds me of the sugar used in dark lord. light-med silky body. low carbonation feel. smooth beer although a tad grainy finish. grimreeser (795), Minnesota, USA Mar 5, 2008 Pours a dark brown with a small tan head, nice lacing. Aroma of smoke, chocolate, and nuts. Flavor seems a little dull. 17thfloor (1402), Chicago, Illinois, USA Mar 5, 2008 Pours think oil black with a medium creamy mocha head. Some smoked peat and slightly metallic aroma. Really an excellent porter. Creamy chocolate and some caramel, little smokey with a very noticeable metallic hoppy edge. Not exactly what I was expecting. Really an excellent fast drinking porter but I prefer my fullers =). (this one reminds me of a nicer version of sierra’s porter) corby112 (671), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 4, 2008 Pours a very dark black with foamy coffee colored head. Beautiful aroma of smoky maltiness, chocolate, nut and toast. This is a very complex beer with lots of smoky malty flavor. Hints of chocolate, toast, nut and roasted coffee. durhambeer (1186), Durham, USA Mar 2, 2008 Viscous inky pour--coated my glass as I swirled. Smoky, chocolately, and nutty on the nose and the palate. Also notes of smoke, sourness, soy, and a little grease. A classic baltic porter from what I can tell. elmatador00 (518), j-action-ville, North Carolina, USA Mar 1, 2008 Courtesy of Dragonstout. Pours a very dark brown with a dark thin head. Aroma is mostly burnt grain. Tastes of cocoa, burnt, nuts, little spice. Mouth feel is full bodied with a silk texture. Davinci (295), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 29, 2008 Pours a deep black with good sized chocolate head. Nice lacing. Very nice to look at. Big whiff of chocolate at first, some oily scents, dark and rich fruit, smoke. Flavor is smokey, fruity, herbal hops... like a rich dark chocolate bar. Mouthfeel is thick anbd wonderful. Peppery alcohol round out some of the other flavors without being overly assertive. Finishes like a piece of chocolate, leaving the mouth watering and craving more. illidurit (851), Santa Cruz, California, USA Feb 27, 2008 Thanks to gunhaver for this bottle.
As it waterfalls out of the bottle you can tell this beer is very dark brown but in the glass it is pitch black. The head struggles to form upwards through this beer’s viscosity, but manages a nice inch of foam. It leaves a thin smattering of lacing before settling to an amorphous cap atop the liquid.
The nose is bitter chocolate, with a sizable dose of roastiness. Some espresso comes through as well.
Taste is far more roasty than the aroma, with some unsweetened chocolate and a charcoal/metallic finish. Pretty classic porter here. I don’t get a lot of dark fruit anywhere in this beer.
Carbonation is pretty smooth but the finish is sticky. The metallic note also hampers the drinkability.
