masto (77), Helsinki, Finland Feb 10, 2008 Updated: Aug 30, 2008Black. Handsome rocky brown head. Dry cocoa aroma. Flavor is rye bread with cocoa, burned malt and a hint of hops. Dry dark chocolate aftertaste. Medium, extremely dry body. Moderate carbonation. All in all, far too dry for me to really enjoy it. travita (1867), Frisco, Texas, USA Feb 10, 2008 Black color with a thick rich tan head. Aromas of oak, molasses, and dark chocolate. Rich dark chocolate flavor with notes of coffee
Goodgrief (1147), Middletown, Delaware, USA Feb 10, 2008 Sept. 2006 - I must be crazy, but I wasn’t crazy about this one. Pour was jet black, with some reddish highlights, no head or lacing. Strong aroma of licorice and chocolate. Mouthfeel wasn’t creamy and was kinda flat and dull. The flavor was just too sweet...with some odd fruitiness and licorice which overpowered what little roastiness and coffee which was present. I prefer Baltika 6 for my Baltic Porter cravings, by far. skoll (123), Traverse City, Michigan, USA Jan 31, 2008 Nice aroma, mainly sweet chocolate with molasses overtones. Black motor oil body topped with creamy latte head, thick rings of lace all the way down. Dark fruits, but sweeter and more intense - like dried plums and figs coated with molasses. This is combined with coffee, milk chocolate, and so much more. It ends roasty and kind of burnt (in a good way), finishes off with a slightly bitter taste. Good beer. Glouglouburp (2782), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jan 29, 2008 In short: Superior porter. very smooth but tasty with molasses, figs, wood, tobaccos and everything.
How: Bottle 12oz from after4ever, thanks a lot Tom. Age unknown but consumed shortly after receiving it.
The look: Black body with a medium tan head with medium retention
In long: Strong molasses nose. The soft but full body is richly malted with upfront molasses and figs flavours and lots of small bubbles. Slowly chocolate joins the party as the beer warms-up. An unexpected but pleasant sensation of wood/barrel although I’m pretty sure it isn’t barrel aged. Surprisingly smooth yet very. The woody hops dry out the beer more than provide bitterness and that’s just fine. As the beer kept warming up more and more woody and tobacco flavours were coming through and it kept getting better. Currently it is both the highest rated and most rated Finland beer and deservingly so. A great beer when you let warm-up to (north-america) room temperature, which by Finland standard is probably considered boiling hot.
asedzie (453), San Francisco, California, USA Jan 23, 2008 Bottle. Pours opaque black-brown with thin tobacco-colored head. Aroma is thick rye - like a rye loaf rising in the oven - attendent mildly funky yeast, some toasted notes round out the aroma along with light milk chocolate and nutty chestnut aromas. Flavor is muted roasted flavors - thick rich coffee, light smokiness- melded with soft bread texture. All around subtle and subdued character, no flavors distinctively stand out. Finish has pine sap-like resiny bitternesss, a hint of dark fruit tartness and lingering smoke flavors. Palate is full, slightly creamy and mildly oily. A beautiful beer for #300. gunhaver (1024), Tampa, Florida, USA Jan 22, 2008 Updated: Jun 4, 2008Ugly little bottle. Pours dark brown, with very little head. Thin braids of lacing remain on the glass; quickly diminish. The aroma is very sweet, but not overwhelming. Chocolate, cotton candy, oozing caramel. Very good. Flavor is great: candied sugars enveloped by nougaty caramel and of course chocolate. A roasted quality is present, but subdued enough to not be a distraction. Great mouthfeel, enough of a kick to balance out the sweetness in the flavors. A warm, chocolatey aftertaste. Very good. HomeBrewHawk (266), De Soto, Kansas, USA Jan 21, 2008 330ml bottle served in a brandy snifter. Poured an opaque black with quickly dissipating tan head. Not a lot of carbonation. Fruity aroma with some cocoa and molasses. Nice creamy mouthfeel. Plenty of malt, slightly sweet. Some roasted malt. A little hop bitterness in the middle and finish to balance the malt. Long dry lingering finish of coffee. Good stuff.
