Aurelius (2643), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Sep 18, 2007 Rich choco-fruity malt aroma with roast. Good label, impressive caramel head on opaque beer. Twang/acidity in the aroma. Smooth, a little metallic - especially the foam. Tangy, most of the bittering is left to the dark malt. Nuts, some cocoa. Very good, but missing hallmarks. Thick. Finishes nicely. Bottle, Ludwigs, Philly. shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Sep 13, 2007 9/12/2007: Sinebrychoff Porter IV pours like motor oil that has been used not once, but twice! It is very dark brown, pretty opaque, and doesn’t really have much of a crown. I think this is a vintage bottle as the carbonation seems to be pretty low as well. The aroma is great! It has lots of rich, complex dark malts, semi-sweet chocolate, sweet licorice, some distance char, and maybe even a hint of Dr. Pepper. The flavor is also quite complex. It has a deep, darkly roasted maltiness, molasses, carmelized sugar, some wood (probably from the oxidation), char, and smooth chocolate undertones. The finish is almost like black coffee in both flavor and bitterness. The mouthfeel of this medium-bodied beer is smooth, but a bit thinner than expected. This beer is quite good overall, but might be slightly past it’s prime...
33 cl / 11.2 fl. oz. bottle (7.2% alc./vol.) from Westside Liquors in West Harrison, Indiana. Rating #584 for this beer...
LiebeBier (788), Annapolis, Maryland, USA Sep 12, 2007 Bottle - Jet black color with a small quickly diminishing head. This beer was grea. Much more malt character than many other Porter. This gives the beer a really nice character that holds up very well to the molasses and chocolate flavors. Really weel done. phllybeer29 (20), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 11, 2007 Sinebrychoff Porter IV. 7.2% alcohol. Very dark color, head don’t last. Taste malty and somewhat sweet. b33r (363), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Sep 8, 2007 Sinebrychoff Porter. Black color with small brown head and nice lacing. Aroma has strong chocolate malts. Flavor is first sweet and then malty and chocolaty as it warmed. IrishBoy (2685), Bakersfield, California, USA Sep 7, 2007 33cl bottle; Nose of chocolate with a molasses note; opaque black with a medium glass-lacing tan head; flavor of a mixture of chocolate, molasses, and some coffee; finish being a very faint hop bitterness. Body is medium; good but not great. A little too molassesy for my taste. mrdasilva (120), Helsinki, Finland Sep 7, 2007 Pitch-black color, nice brown head. Chocolaty, sweet, soft aroma has some berries in it too. Long, multi-dimensional flavor. Very dry and bitter. Coal-like ending. Some espersso notes. iowaherkeye (1832), Bakersfield, California, USA Sep 6, 2007 11.2oz, no date. Deep brown with a two finger tan head, fades to a 1/4" film after a bit.. Loads of semisweet chocolate and molasses in the aroma, some roast, and soy and nuts in the background. The slightest tinge of spicy alcohol present. The flavor even has a hint of smokiness--dunno where that came from. Lots of chocolate and scorched caramel in the flavor, roasted grain and ashy semidry finish. The alcohol is more apparent than it probably should be (at 7.2%) as it warms. Low carbonation, medium body. Very good beer that I have overlooked a few times before at John’s Grocery.
