Lightly oxidized, sherry nose with anise, caramel and chocolate. The flavor is lightly sweet, roasted with some dark fruits, toffee and dark chocolates. Medium body is very soft with light carbonation. This has held up quite nicely. DrBayern (1135), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA

Opaque black with ruby highlights and a creamy thick brown head. Dark fruity aroma with some coffee notes and spice. Thick and luxuriously chewy, with some lingering bitterness and a little oiliness. nicely balanced with a solid malt base and assertive spicy bitterness. A real treat, deserving of its reputation. jbrus (4842), Delft, Netherlands

Not very strong aroma but there are black berries, moccha and some hops. Black color, thick light brown head, good lace. Sweet, chocolate, coffee, soft bitterness. Thick and soft mouthfeel. In the far finish hops are increasing which is nice. Zinister (1199), Houston, Texas, USA

This beer seemed to be the guest beer in several Maastricht pubs on the day, a great find. Full of heavily roasted malt giving strong coffee notes with chocolate malt bitterness, in fact intensely bitter. On the beer warming up a slight tartness developed giving further depth. Yum. 19641948 (492), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA

The flavour is predominantly dry and bitter with some coffee notes coming through. The texture is rich and oily giving a great mouthfeel.

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jul 31, 2007 Rated 7/31/07. Pours into the glass like the darkest, dirtiest motor oil. There is an audible "glug, glug, glug" sound as it flows from the bottle. The body is black, period. Black as night. There is a small mocha colored head that leaves behind some very nice lacing. The aroma is a harmonious mix of sweet chocolate, stewed raisons, anise, faint smoke, and a hint of dark fruits (maybe cherries). The flavor is surprisingly void of the dark fruits, but roasted barley, coffee, and molasses take their place. Bitter hops do well to balance out the sugary sweetness. The palate on this beer is about as thick and viscous as any I’ve encountered to date. Excellent brew!
