4.2 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 asedzie (520) - San Francisco, California, USA - JAN 23, 2008
Bottle. Pours opaque black-brown with thin tobacco-colored head. Aroma is thick rye - like a rye loaf rising in the oven - attendent mildly funky yeast, some toasted notes round out the aroma along with light milk chocolate and nutty chestnut aromas. Flavor is muted roasted flavors - thick rich coffee, light smokiness- melded with soft bread texture. All around subtle and subdued character, no flavors distinctively stand out. Finish has pine sap-like resiny bitternesss, a hint of dark fruit tartness and lingering smoke flavors. Palate is full, slightly creamy and mildly oily. A beautiful beer for #300.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 gunhaver (1030) - Tampa, Florida, USA - JAN 22, 2008
UPDATED: JUN 4, 2008 Ugly little bottle. Pours dark brown, with very little head. Thin braids of lacing remain on the glass; quickly diminish. The aroma is very sweet, but not overwhelming. Chocolate, cotton candy, oozing caramel. Very good. Flavor is great: candied sugars enveloped by nougaty caramel and of course chocolate. A roasted quality is present, but subdued enough to not be a distraction. Great mouthfeel, enough of a kick to balance out the sweetness in the flavors. A warm, chocolatey aftertaste. Very good.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 HomeBrewHawk (420) - De Soto, Kansas, USA - JAN 21, 2008
330ml bottle served in a brandy snifter. Poured an opaque black with quickly dissipating tan head. Not a lot of carbonation. Fruity aroma with some cocoa and molasses. Nice creamy mouthfeel. Plenty of malt, slightly sweet. Some roasted malt. A little hop bitterness in the middle and finish to balance the malt. Long dry lingering finish of coffee. Good stuff.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Beershine (4561) - The Sunshine State, Florida, USA - JAN 20, 2008
Looks as gorgeous as a beer can: thick, black, several fingers’ worth of frothy tan head and intricate lacing. Artwork in a glass. Aroma is cold cave, damp, delicious, cellar, can, simple. Stunning roasted aftertaste, nuanced, complex, smooth, rich, and moreish. Flavor proceeds along an impressive extended arch with smooth coffee entry, chewy middle, and a lingering burnt finish. Mouthfeel is soft, silky, smooth, and thins out slightly at the end. 100% enjoyment in spite of "starch" being listed as an ingredient on the label (which is billed as Sinebrychoff Porter IV).
3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Tenderstone (25) - Renton, Washington, USA - JAN 20, 2008
33cl bottle labeled as Sinebrychoff Porter IV. Pours a very dark brown as it flows out of the bottle. Once in the glass, it is a rich black with a tan head. Plenty of molasses in the nose, along with a little malt. The flavor is of coffee and a little brown sugar. Medium body with a smooth bitterness. Finish is warm, with a bitter, but not unwelcome, aftertaste.

Bottle [Thanks to Harri for bring it back from Finland] Huge brown creamy head that really lasted. Excellent lacework. Pitch black colour. Aroma of coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt, grain, oat, hint of dried fruit and what feels like a hint of smoke. Over the palate roasted malt, light bitter liquorish and coffee. Full bodied with an average carbonation and light dry, alcoholic and thick texture. Moderated sweet and bitter flavour. Dark chocolate like bitter finish.
