robertjm (399), El Cerrito, California, USA May 9, 2009 Pours nice dark tan head. Fairly foamy, but it does eventually collapse. Aroma heavy in malts and dark sugars. Dark black body with no light passing through. Not overly roasted in flavor, but bitterness does creep up in the aftertaste. Good body. Not thin, but not overly thick like some Baltics can be. CanIHave4Beers (838), Des Moines, Iowa, USA May 4, 2009 Pours a deep black with a big tan head leaving a very good lace. The aroma is very plummy with some vanilla and chocolate. The aroma doesn’t smack you across the nose, you’ve kind of got to get you’re face in the glass, but what is there is very nice indeed. The flavor is complex lots of wonderful things going on. There is a deep earthiness, with complimentary dark fruit notes of raisin and plum. There is a slight burnt toast/burnt sugar thing going on that tastes far better than it sounds. This is very robust and very roasty, with a bitterness that reminds me of espresso but it’s weird because there isn’t much coffee in the flavor. This isn’t particularly dry but it’s in no way cloying. The beer finishes off with a wonderful lingering lightly syrupy mouth feel. Freaking wonderful! Pours deep dark brown, mocha head
Aroma , malty, some bitter chocolate and roasted malts
Taste was just amazing Lots of good chocolate, coffee, roasted malts with a light bitter finish
Mouthfeel leans more toward cocoa with some charcoal palate, dry finish JohnnyJ (1283), Carlsbad, California, USA Apr 18, 2009 Bottle many thanks from mreusch. Pours a very dark brown, almost black. Very malty, caramel, dark chocolate, smoke, raisins, molasses, and hints of coffee. Roasty with some saltiness. I enjoyed it. Thanks Matt. BeerViking (193), Brentford, Greater London, England Apr 17, 2009 Cask and handpump at the Plough & Harrow in Hammersmith. Black-brown with beige head, lots of liquorice on the nose and palate, sharp bitter finish, but the body is oddly dry and slightly salty - echoes of salt lakrids! A bit thinner than I expected and dry rather than creamy. Reminds me of a beery Black Pig or North Sea Oil... rosenbergh (843), Helsinki, Finland Apr 17, 2009 330 ml bottle. Finland.
Dark brown colour with big fluffy tan head.
Roasted malts, dark chocolate and dried fruits in aroma. Rich flavour is roasted malts, coffee. Very dry and warming (without taste of alcohol). Excellent. esjaygee (1467), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA Apr 12, 2009 Brown with ruby lowlights and a large tan creamy head that slowly disappears and leaves some spotty lacing in its wake. Aroma of chocolate, molasses, raison, cocoa, roasted and dark malts. Taste of chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, molasses and raison. Beer has a nice full mouth feel but finishes up coating the tongue with a residue that reminds me of artificial sweetener, not so pleasant. There’s some warming on the back end.
