One of the better chocolate aromas I’ve noted in a beer, that more than makes up for its lack of complexity. In the mouth this beer opens with creamy sweetness and some cherry notes. The rich, bitter chocolate flavors quickly mix and combine with the hops to dry this beer out considerably. The finish is a long and strong combination of all the preceding flavors. The mouthfeel, body, and finish on this beer are all perfect more than makes up for the lack of deep complexity in flavor. Excellent beer. asedzie (457), San Francisco, California, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 23, 2008 Bottle. Pours opaque black-brown with thin tobacco-colored head. Aroma is thick rye - like a rye loaf rising in the oven - attendent mildly funky yeast, some toasted notes round out the aroma along with light milk chocolate and nutty chestnut aromas. Flavor is muted roasted flavors - thick rich coffee, light smokiness- melded with soft bread texture. All around subtle and subdued character, no flavors distinctively stand out. Finish has pine sap-like resiny bitternesss, a hint of dark fruit tartness and lingering smoke flavors. Palate is full, slightly creamy and mildly oily. A beautiful beer for #300. May or may not have been a 2003 or 2004 vintage. Pours a nice inky brown with a small mocha head. Aroma is major anise, prunes, alcohol, and roasty malts. The flavour is really nice, and in one word I would describe it as balanced. Big sweetness up front, dark fruits, roasty malt, hint of coffee, but with a very dry astringent finish that works perfectly with the preceding sweetness. No hint of booze whatsoever. Decently complex, though I wouldn’t say that it’s a stand-out in that respect. I’ve been craving this style, and it’s something I’d rather have on a brisk winter evening, but for the time being it hit the spot, and I really enjoyed it. Top notch stuff I wish I could get locally! hellbilly (1577), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jul 31, 2007 Rated 7/31/07. Pours into the glass like the darkest, dirtiest motor oil. There is an audible "glug, glug, glug" sound as it flows from the bottle. The body is black, period. Black as night. There is a small mocha colored head that leaves behind some very nice lacing. The aroma is a harmonious mix of sweet chocolate, stewed raisons, anise, faint smoke, and a hint of dark fruits (maybe cherries). The flavor is surprisingly void of the dark fruits, but roasted barley, coffee, and molasses take their place. Bitter hops do well to balance out the sugary sweetness. The palate on this beer is about as thick and viscous as any I’ve encountered to date. Excellent brew! CanIHave4Beers (930), Des Moines, Iowa, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 4, 2009 Pours a deep black with a big tan head leaving a very good lace. The aroma is very plummy with some vanilla and chocolate. The aroma doesn’t smack you across the nose, you’ve kind of got to get you’re face in the glass, but what is there is very nice indeed. The flavor is complex lots of wonderful things going on. There is a deep earthiness, with complimentary dark fruit notes of raisin and plum. There is a slight burnt toast/burnt sugar thing going on that tastes far better than it sounds. This is very robust and very roasty, with a bitterness that reminds me of espresso but it’s weird because there isn’t much coffee in the flavor. This isn’t particularly dry but it’s in no way cloying. The beer finishes off with a wonderful lingering lightly syrupy mouth feel. Freaking wonderful! jkwalking05 (1501), Arlington, Texas, USA
