3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 TET (685) - FINLAND - JUN 1, 2007
UPDATED: MAR 20, 2008 Velvet is beautiful almost black beer with intence coffee-brown head. Aroma is slightly sour and there are roasted malts and maybe some coffee. Flavour is quite roasted but still nice balanced with sweetness and bitterness. Smooth and nice to drink.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 heemer77 (4754) - Urbandale, Iowa, USA - MAY 28, 2007
From a can, thanks oh6gdx. The head is generous and a medium khaki color. There is lots of lacing left on the side of the glass. This smells like bubblegum and fresh tobacco, almost like a dunkel to my nose. The light body is sticky with a low amount of carbonation. The taste is roasted walnuts with some light tobacco and coffee notes. At the front of the beer is a strange, slightly sweet berry character. Almost like there is a hint of blackberry juice. This could be a little less sweet, but I find that many European Schwarzbiers I have tried have this similar character. Not bad, but I wouldn’t want very much of this beer.
2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 FatPhil (5965) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - MAY 12, 2007
Stickier than a real Schwartz, and not as clean or crisp. Basically a bit sludgy and unsophisticated, but chock full of something vaguely related to malt and hops. One of the only beers to give me a "never again" following morning.

Bottle. very dark reddish color, almost opaque. Nice sticky light brown head, looks like whipped egg whites. Only aroma that I can catch is metallic. Also flavor is mild and watery with a hint of roasted malt.

Bottle. Clear dark red / brown color with a average good lacing light brown head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, chocolate, coffe. Flavor moderate sweet and light bitter with a short duration. Body is light to medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is moderate to heavy metalic. No my kind of schwartzbier !!

UPDATED: MAY 10, 2010 After tasting quite a few german scharzbier’s, I don’t really hold Velvet too high. It tastes quite metallic and watery. Not a bad one, but to speak the truth, I rarely buy this. Re-rate: Dark brown, biggish beige head. Nose has fresh hops (?), candy, milk, coffee. Surprisingly fresh with some sourness. Flavor is very subtle and disappointing after nice and beefy nose. Some sour roasted malts, old coffee. Very little taste really. Might work with certain food or for thirst, but not really a treat. Heard it’s now sacked and I’m not gonna miss it, if maybe the idea of dark cheapish bulk. Raised score from 2.2.
