COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our brewers wanted to make a beer that went down easy after a day out on the water. Big Wave Golden Ale is just the ticket. Big Wave is a lighter bodied golden ale with a tropical hop aroma and flavor – a smooth, easy drinking refreshing ale. The use of caramel malt contributes to the golden hue of this beer and our special blend of hops provides bright quenching finish. 10.3°

Malts: Pale (Premium 2-Row), Caramel
Hops: Galaxy, Citra

Pours out light golden color with a small white head, well carbonated. Aroma is not very noticible, but of sweet malts and some grass notes. Watery mouthfeel with not very well established flavor. Notes of hop on the finish otherwise not really much going on here

12oz. Bottle: Aromas of honey, coriander, tea, malt (hay, grain, pear), and hops (flowers). Poured hazy golden/amber/ Small, rocky, off-white head did not last. No lacing. Hazy. Sparkling. Flavor is malty and tastes of dirt, honey, sourdough, and some spice I cannot identify. Also a bit of a herbal hop flavor in the finish. Medium sweet. Not really bitter. Not well balanced. Light body. Thin texture. Soft carbonation. Long, malty, strange tasting finish. Overall, uninspiring. Not a bad beer, but really not good either.

I don’t really understand why this beer needs to be made in addition to all of their other lighter offerings. (See my review of their Duke’s Blonde Ale.) No flaws here, just not a lot of flavor or dimension.

Pours a golden color with a thin, fizzy, white head. Aroma is of yeast, caramel, and some sweet malts. Nothing too complex. Flavor was the same with yeast, caramel, and some slight earthy tones. This brew was ok but I would never go out searching for it.

I was mostly disappointed to hear that Kona brews all of the bottled product and most of the draft in Oregon, I thought I was buying Hawaiian Local Beer, the "Big Wave" was an okay beer, decent aroma, but the sharp bite hit hard, and left me with a bitter finish.

Good when consumed on tap and bottled, a warm, golden color, kind of fizzy, however it has a foul finish. A disappointing way to end a semi-good beer.

For my dad. The body was dark gold with a very thin white head. The aroma had sweet pears with a little caramel and hay. The taste had caramel, tea and some honey. There was also some cardboard. This was ok, but I would like to try a fresher sample.

UPDATED: JUN 17, 2006 This is not my first beer from Kona brewing on the Big Island. This ale was enjoyed in the bottle on Oahu at a resturant in Hale’iwa on the coast. The big waves of Hawaii were just off the beach. The head formation was white and stayed with the beer. This was enjoyable drink with dinner. It is not a complex beverage. There was some sweetness and hints of yeast. This is very similar to a Bud or Miller product. It would be great for the beach and picnics.

Draft at a bar in Kona: Hazy and bright orange, with a frothy white head (nice looking!). Creamy-soft texture up front; lively carbonation cleaned out each swallow. Malts had a mild sweetness (sweet bread) followed by a bread dough stickiness and a big yeast cake aroma. Very mild bitterness, mostly herbal. Too yeasty and a little too cloying to be refreshing, but otherwise not so bad.

Had this on-tap at the brewery. Beer was a clear, light-gold color without any head to speak of. The aroma was moderately hoppy with notes of apricot and pine and miscellaneous banana, honey and juicy-sweet tropical fruit esters. The flavor began lightly bittersweet with a short, moderately bitter finish. The body was light, the texture was watery and the carbonation was fizzy.
