A full-bodied, American-Style I.P.A. that is bronze in color, Castaway IPA is "dry hopped" (aged with liberal amounts of whole hop flowers after fermentation) for assertive hop flavor and aroma. The bitterness is balanced by the malty body of the beer.

Pours a nice burnt orange color with with head. Nice lacing. Aroma is sweet with hints of fruit and hops. Taste is hoppy with some malts. The alcohol coming through. Warm. Not bad, but I wouldn’t want to be stranded with this one.

UPDATED: DEC 21, 2010 Sample at the brewpub in Kailua. The beer is a slightly hazy copper-orange color with a thick and fluffy off-white head that disperses slowly. Sticky rings of lacing. Floral hops aroma along with some malt and sweet fruit. Medium body with a moderately bitter hops flavor that has a nice floral character. Notes of pine and malt as well. The finish is hoppy with a lingering bitter aftertaste. Above average overall.

Draft at Marina Pub. Pours a little more orange and viscous than the Lavaman, red clear glowing amber. Sweet nutty aroma, touch of yeast and resiny citrus hops. Nice resiny citrus hop flavor, lightly woody, peach, tropical fruit, soft but enough hop bite, balanced sweetness. Well attenuated, a little more body than most Kona brews, softer fizzy carbonation.

Draught. Golden copper color, thin white head, scant lacing. Aroma of straw and grass. Taste is bitter throughout, decent hops. Slightly on the bland side, but tasty enough on a hot day.

Served on tap at the Marina Brewpub. The appearance is a brown toned gold. The flavors and aromas are full of earthy hop flowers, pinecone, mild pepper spice. Malt backing provides some nice balance.

Draft at brewpub. Pour is slightly cloudy and deep reddish brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is notable pine hops with a touch of citrus and a firm malt backbone. Flavor is also full of pine hops with a notable caramel malt backbone. Solid effort.

Tap. A hazy golden beer with an OK head. Not a lot of aroma but some fruity hops in there as is the taste. An average IPA.

On tap at the brewpub. Light amber, heavy lacing, hazy, nice looking. Heavy pine nose, fmalty sweet body, leans a tad toward an APA. Hoppy tang blasts you at the end. Excellent.

On Tap at the brewery in Kona - Poured dark copper color with thin off white head. Aroma - Detected more malt than hops. Had a toasted malt scent followed by floral and herbal hops. Flavor - A nice balance of malt with a decent amount of hops. I think this is an excellent version of this style. Does’nt have the overpowering hops like a IIPA, the malt shines through more on this brew! Palate - Medium bodied and has average carbonation. Finish is somewhat bitter and very little aftertaste. Overall - I liked this beer, not overly impressed but a definite must try if you make to Hawaii!!
