COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A full-bodied, American-Style I.P.A. that is bronze in color, Castaway IPA is "dry hopped" (aged with liberal amounts of whole hop flowers after fermentation) for assertive hop flavor and aroma. The bitterness is balanced by the malty body of the beer.

On draft at the Kona Brewery, Hawaii. Had this one next to the Fire Rock Pale Ale, and the Castaway had a much fresher, stronger hops presence. Not so much that it was more bitter, but rather there was more of a fresh, pine-y, resin taste due to the dry hopping. This was a nice change of pace from the typical IPA.

Gold color, great lacing. hardly any head though. Creamy mouth, hoppy bitter finish. Aroma is incredibly weak for this though. Not bad but still missing something for me.

UPDATED: MAR 6, 2009 On tap at Kona Koko Marina. Pours clear orange-amber with practically no head. Nose is mostly floral hops- pine and marijuana- with a little caramel. Tastes like it smells, but with the malty sweetness a little more pronounced. Mouthfeel is surprisingly thick and finish is long.

On tap at the brewery-- This one rates way up there on my scale. This brew has everything I want in a beer--superb balance of flavors, hearty hop aroma and taste, nice pallate & appearance--very close to the perfect brew. Wish the brewery wasn't thousands of miles away...

Pours a nice burnt orange color with with head. Nice lacing. Aroma is sweet with hints of fruit and hops. Taste is hoppy with some malts. The alcohol coming through. Warm. Not bad, but I wouldn’t want to be stranded with this one.

(24Mar2003--draft at brewery) A real IPA. Excellent effort, though again, excellent execution without going very far outside the box. 6.8% ABV, 45 IBU. Sweet aroma, kool-aid (not bad). Very malty flavor, perfect bitterness. Nice notes of Cascades hops in flavor and nose.

I had this beer on tap at the brewery while I was on vacation there. This is light amber in color with a slightly off-white head. It has a very strong hop aroma with heavy grapefruit aromas. The flavor is surprisingly malty, but the hops do dominate. This beer has a high level of bitterness, as is expected. The hop flavor makes apparent the use of dry hopping. This medium bodied beer has decent drinkability, but I would have rated it higher if I was a bigger fan of double IPA’s in general.

We drove up the west coase of the Big Island looking for a place to eat and came across the Kona Pub and Brewery. The food was good, and the beer.... This one proves that Hawaiians can brew good beer.
