3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Rastacouere (5923) - Montréal, - OCT 17, 2005
Straight black, the head quickly recedes to a lasting sheet of light brown foam. Slightly lactic nose reminds of pastry cream and sweetish rooty vanilla as much as it does dark chocolate. The coffee roastiness is there up front, but the global feel reminds me of a foreign stout more than an impy. The tendency keeps on in mouth where brown sugar flavors intersperse the beany, quite roasty malty profile with full coffee flavors and supporting hops. Quite drinkable for the style though the mouthfeel suffers a bit, thinner than it feels. Yep, a nice one to pair with homemade cookies I imagine. Not quite what I expected, but who the hell has expectations for an imperial from Hawaii?

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 peteinSD (632) - San Diego, California, USA - MAY 28, 2011
Velvety tan head on the pour. Aroma is rich coffee, soft chocolate, and roasted malt. Taste is dominated by clean, powerful coffee followed by roasted malt and subtle bitter hops on the back. Exceptionally smooth feel in the mouth. Very enjoyable coffee imperial stout - shame it’s not bottled.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 headheldhigh (100) - Walnut, California, USA - FEB 15, 2011
On tap Da Grind pours a murky black producing a moderate tan head which left little lacing. Smells of coffee of course mixed with roasted malts plus hints of semisweet chocolate. The mouth feel is good partly due to the nice carbination. Tastes closely follows the aromas but there is a somewhat disappointing metallic aftertaste. Overall, an above average imperial stout.

Served on tap at the Kona Marina Brewpub. The appearance is a deep night black with a good sized creamy light brown head. The aromas are full of rich heavy roasted dark roasted Kona coffee and rich with maltiness. The flavors are more of the same. The rich coffee with definitely on a sweeter side with some lactose sugars in there. Heavy roasted malt bill. The mouth is full bodied and nicely creamy. Great brew that I am glad to run into in HI finally.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 MaxxDaddy (307) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - JAN 9, 2011
On tap at Kailua brewery. Listed as "Da Kine Grind." Pours black with light tan head. Aroma of chocolate and coffee. Taste brings sweet coffee and roastiness. A bit thin for an imperial stout, though it does make it quite drinkable. A good beer, not great.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20 can8ianben (1127) - Souderton, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 17, 2010
Happy to say that this was rating number 1000. A well deserving stout of big proportions and huge flavor. This one is like chilled coffee with a rich dark malt sweet flavor backbone. Thick, but not chewy. This is a stout that doesn’t feel too heavy. Incredibly black color with a thick head which is retained throughout. Brilliant beer.

Pours jet black with tan head. Good lacing. Aroma of coffee and chocolate. Taste is bold, but body is weaker than expected. Nice bitter, dark chocolate taste. Plenty of hops. Overall, very nice.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Dogbrick (4843) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - DEC 7, 2010
UPDATED: DEC 21, 2010 On draught at the brewpub in Kailua, served in a snifter. The beer pours black with a medium beige head that burns away slowly. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted coffee, dark chocolate and malt. Rich and smooth body with a strong black coffee character accented by mildly bitter hops, toasted malt and chocolate. The finish is roasty with a lingering coffee aftertaste. Good beer all around.
