Hula Hefeweizen is a traditional Bavarian-style weissbier that is medium to full bodied with a pronounced banana / herbal flavor and aroma. This unique flavor profile is a result of the special type of yeast strain used to brew this beer. 11.5°

Malts: Pale (Premium 2-Row), Wheat, Munich
Hops: Willamette, Hallertau

Had this on-tap at the brewery. The beer poured a murky, light orange-yellow color with a small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing head. The aroma was bright with light hoppy notes of lemon/citrus, grass and apricot and a moderate yeasty note of basement in the background. There was also a very strong and neat banana overtone. The flavor started moderatley sweet and ended in an average-length, moerately sweet, lightly bitter finish. The body was light-to-medium and the texture was watery with lively carbonation. Very refreshing and interesting!

Strong banana aroma. Murky, dark orange body with no head. Nice flavor. Fruity. Good complexity of flavors. I would put this up against most American Hefe’s and it would do quite well. A good effort.

I had this on tap at a place where I’m Sure they don’t sell alot, so I may have to try it again! I wasn’t too impressed, very light taste, I like a heavier Hefe, it was ok on the hot day, but it tasted watered down, and bland, not much like hefe, I’ll try it again in bottle!

Milky and opaque, cloudy and orange. Good banana-like aroma but only a light yeasy character, while lightly fruity.

(24Mar2003--draft at brewery) Certainly better and more style-consistent than the limp mainland offerings like Pyramid's Hefe. Still, one of my least favorite Kona brews. Banana should be a component of the aroma/flavor of a good weissbier. Here, bananas dominate. Very hazy, with a disappointingly small, limp head.

UPDATED: MAR 20, 2003 This seems to be the latest of the Kona's to have made it to SoCal and must be new asit's not listed on their website. Many people at my work order it for the name but I think that Kona makes some really good beers. The hefe is no exception amd may be one of the closest examples I've found to a German wheat, with cloves both in the aroma and on the palate, while there's some backbone with apricot and banana fruitiness. No lemon needed.
