3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 02/09/2012. Pours a clear dark reddish-amber color with a medium foamy light beige head that diminishes slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted nuts, malt and vanilla. Medium body with a roasted coconut flavor as well as notes of earthy malt and caramel. The finish is roasty with a coconut aftertaste. I am not a fan of coconut typically but it works in this beer. Above average overall.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Gorgeous, deep crystal brown with a creamy tanned head. Pleasant toasted coconut and brown malt scents waft off the glass like a Hawaian evening breeze. The defining characteristic of this brew is the splendid naturalness of the coconut character. Dried coconut smell intermingles with a well-structured brown malt body. These components meld perfectly in flavor. Dryish coconut-whiskey finish. Just a superbly crafted and nuanced take on the brown ale style.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: OCT 4, 2014 Light brown, nutty character and a hit of toasted coconut, has a lot of sweetness. The coconut sweetness is pretty strong but there is some nutty balance.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
a - a nice dark brown with a decent head that fades to a sheen pretty quickly. s - coconut, butterscotch, toffee and chocolate malts. t - just like the smell but the butterscotch is lingering only at the end. Nice chocolate touch from this. f - light mouthfeel, med dryness with some lingering. I can’t pinpoint what is missing, but something on the mouthfeel would really bring this more alive. o - overall, a pretty solid beer! I wasn’t sure what to expect but the coconut is subtle enough with the nice malt back that I could definitely have a couple.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Harris Teeter, DC six-pack ($7.50): Pours a brown color with a cream head. Aroma is of sugar, vanilla, nuttiness. Ultimately, I don’t really dig this. I think it was really way too sweet. I didn’t really taste the coconut, but I did taste a lot of sugar and nuttiness (like sweet hazelnut type stuff). Not really my thing, but I still drank half the six-pack.

Brown appearance with a beige head. Aroma contains some nutmeg, chocolate milk, and toffee. Flavor is rather sweet with some cocoa powder, caramel, coconut, and toffee. The finish is also sweet. Overall this is different but pretty good.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a clear brown with a medium tan head. Aroma has roasty malt with some caramely notes...mild coconut and vanilla...almost bourbony. Flavor has creamy vanilla and coconut with good roasty backing and light hoppiness...still almost bourbony. Mouthfeel is light and the finish is roasty and dry. Nice brown ale!

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz. Bottle: Aroma of malt, toasting, nuts, slight roasting, and slight cocoa. I do not get any coconut. Poured copper/deep orange in color with a small, off-white head that diminished but lasted throughout as a film on top of the beer. Clear. Sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet and slightly bitter. Tastes of malt, cocoa, nuts, toasting, and roasting. Again, I get no coconut. Medium body. Dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt, toasting, cocoa, nut, finish is lightly sweet and dry.
