Lavaman Red Ale is a malty, red ale with strong caramel notes and a subtle chocolate malt flavor. The pronounced maltiness is balanced by the delicate blend of Pacific Northwest hops resulting in a smooth, full-bodied beer.

UPDATED: DEC 21, 2010 Sample at the brewpub in Kailua. The beer pours a dark amber color with a medium off-white head that recedes steadily. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Caramel malt and citrus aroma. Light body with flavors of sweet malt and caramel along with mildly bitter hops and citrus. The finish is earthy and malty and does not linger long. Slightly above average overall.

Amber pour wth off white head and lace. Aroma of caramel malt. Caramel malt with a bit of a metallic funk. Thin and fizzy. Very drinkable.

Draft at Marina Pub. Pours a beautiful brilliant clear glowing amber. Odd aroma, bit nutty, yeast, dry, something I can’t place. Lightly sweet, a bit odd, maybe old, lightly resiny hoppy, light caramel, longer lasting biscuit aftertaste, sweet toasted caramel, I wonder if it is something in the water out here that makes all these beers taste somewhat similar. Fairly dry, light sweetness, like a diet-soda.

Tap at brewpub. Pour is clear red with a hint of white bubbles around the edges of the glass. Aroma is lightly malty with hints of pine hop. Not overly complex, but solid. Flavor is true to nose with light malt and a hint of hop. Easy drinkin’.

On tap at some Mexican restaurant near Kona. Started badly, finished better. Strangely much better with Mexican food, which made it start tasting like a rich fruity pale ale.

At the brewpub, draft. Malty, thin body. Clear red. Nice looking. Average beer, with the malty notes in palate and nose.

On tap several locations in Hawaii - Poured dark amber color with medium off white head. Aroma - biscuity malt and mild floral hops. Light citrus scent and mainly alot of malt aroma Flavor - caramel malt and mild earthy yeast taste finishing up with touch of herbal hops. Palate - medium bodied with average carbonation. Finish is quick and little aftertaste! Overall - I had several of these during happy hour and thought this beer was ok. Its easy to drink with no offensive tastes.

Tap at the brewpub. Weak, bland flavor, a little caramel and a smidgen of hop, with some bandaid and cardboard flavor. Very dull.

DeScription sounds much better than the beer I enjoyed. On draught at Leilani’s on Ka’anapali Beach. Clear amber colour with a creamy white head that bubbled away quickly. Aroma is caramel and hint of citrus. Taste is significantly unmalty, just a dry hopped amber that finishes bitter and unbalanced. The "pronounced maltiness" described...never occurred. Disappointing, but a drinkable, hoppy amber beer.

Sampler at Kona brewpub. Copper color, not much aroma. Nice smooth body, balanced hops and malts, light body. Good session beer.
