1.9 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
On tap at Old Chicago in Phoenix. Clear and light golden in colour with a medium sized head. Sweet and a bit malty. Kinda thin and very perfumed and flowery. Has an artificial feel to it sadly.

On tap is superior to the bottled, contract-brewed mainland version. Neither beers have too much going on, however. No flaws to speak of, but leaves us wanting more in the way of flavor. Kona offers an unusually extensive lineup of light, bland beers. My theory is that they think people want those beers since it is so hot in Hawai’i, or that their tourist clientele desires it to go with their pub food--which is fantastic. Seek out their more exciting offerings which will not disappoint.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: SEP 4, 2006 A sold well balanced clean lager. Nice clarity with a medium-sized quickly dissipating white head. Bready malt flavor with light hops. Soft silky mouthfeel. A great quencher on a hot day.

Draught, in Blackhawk - Ancona Pizza. Hawian Lager, I spy, gota try that... okay so it’s malty, and it’s a lager. That’s about it.... not bad, but had better.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Draft at Washington Brewer’s Festival. Had a bit more of a malty backbone than most lagers, but otherwise it’s pretty much standard issue.

From the bottle.
Pours straw-yellow with a nice white head. Though the nose has its share of cat-urine along with grassy hops and sweet corn, this is actually a fairly tolerable US lager. For the flavor we’ve got a warm malty body, rather sweet. Admittedly, the finish is not particularly pleasant, vegetal and slightly metallic.
Not great, not an absolutely disaster. I finished my bottle happily enough.

Pours yellow with thin head. Aroma is very much like straw. Crisp finish. Standard american lager.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Poured a pretty light amber color with a decent head that laced ok. Lacing might have been the highlight. Aroma was sweet and somewhat corn-like. Flavor was a bit sloppy for a lager (light fruity esters in a lager? sweet and incomplete attenuation?) but a noticeable but light hop zing in the finish. Mouthfeel was light. Flavor was like a lighter and sweeter Sam Adams.
