Served from the tap with a deep mahogany brown color and a thin creamy white head. The aroma had a berry-like malt sweetness up front with some earthy hops beneath. The flavor is more satisfying, with a smooth combination of earthy, herbal hops and a rich caramel malt sweetness. The beer seems fairly lightly carbonated, which helps to let the flavors out a bit, but it also makes the alcohol content of this one more noticeable.

Served on tap at the Marina Brew Pub. The appearance is a tawny brown with no real head. Flavors and aromas are perfume, alcohol, and a fair amount of hops. Did really do it for me.

A caramel color beer with not much head. The aroma is sweet with brown sugar showing up most. The taste is mainly caramel and goes down real easy. I was shocked to find out this was 12.5% ABV as it is hidden.

(Draught) Sampled at the brewery on October 1, 2009. Near headless with a mahogany body. Raisin pudding, with a good hoppy profile. Lovely balance between the malt and hops. Figs, chocolate milk, sour cherries. Kind of odd as a late-summer season (October) but done well to style. Very enjoyable.

On tap 10/19 @ Kona Brewing Co. in Honolulu. Pours a deep burgandy with reddish tones and a light tan head that is mostly lasting leaving nice lacing. Has a rich malty flavor and aroma with hints of caramel. This well-balanced brew has a creamy texture leaving a dry bitterness. An excellent sipping brew that is warming.

UPDATED: FEB 8, 2010 Kona Brewing on Oahu: Creamy and full textured. Awesome caramel and toffee flavors. Sweetened nuts and fresh bread, too. Nice level of hops. Kona Brewing on the Big Island: 2007 vintage on draft - super nice and tasty. Very rich malts, with only a mild bitterness, yet surprisingly decent aromas. Complex with high alcohol that was hidden well. Tasty stuff. 2007 vintage sampled at the brewery Nov. 2009: Lusciously creamy. Big toffee. Lesser elements of chocolate and coffee, with subtle hints of caramel-coated nuts. Rich and flavorful, yet delicate and nuanced.

Had this on tap at the Kona brewpub after a tour of the place while vacationing in Hawaii. This was definitely one of their better brews and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

On tap at Toronado for Barleywine fest ’09. Amber color with an off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt, dark fruits, cannabis, and piney Northwest-style hops. Flavor is more of the same, lots of sweet malt and well-hopped. Full mouthfeel and nice alcohol warmth.

GABF 2007. Smells of buttery toffee and raisins, classic BW smell. Smooth in the mouth, nicely hoppy on the end. The beginning is like a light fruit syrup, a concentrated but delicate (not treacly) sweetness. I would not be opposed to drinking this more often, but it is what it is.

On tap at Koko Marina. Poured a slightly hazy amber/red with a thin off white head. Aroma of malt and some piney hops with a wood note. Flavor was well balanced with a huge malt base, a nutty flavor and a good amount of hops to finish it out. The alcohol had a very slight warming effect.
