Tawny brown in color with an intense, rich, hearty malt flavor and warming characteristics. The bold maltiness is balanced by liberal amounts of hops. Aged for a minimum of seven months before being tapped each year.

GABF 2007: Poured a hazy copper color with an off-white head. Dark fruit aroma that was semi-sweet. The flavor was of browned apples and dark fruits. Some figs. Medium to full body and semi-dry.

This was a drsft pour at the Brewpub in Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. In the glass came a red with a tan head. Nose of rich caramel malts and some citrus and ripe fruit. Alcohol for sure. Medium in body and a very alcoholic mouthfeel. Flavor is fruity with s good dose of citrus hops. Finish is bitter and again alcohol dominates. Good barley wine except I could have done with a bit less alcohol as you might have guessed.

On tap at the 2005 Great Alaska Beer and Barley Wine Festival. This beer won third place at the Festival, but I didn’t get it. I thought it looked murky orange with a thin beige foamy head. It seemed under carbonated. Sweet alcohol nose with a syrupy mouthfeel. Flavors of honey, sweet caramel and some vanilla. It seemed a little raw. I must be the minority in this one.

On tap at Toronado for Barleywine fest ’09. Amber color with an off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt, dark fruits, cannabis, and piney Northwest-style hops. Flavor is more of the same, lots of sweet malt and well-hopped. Full mouthfeel and nice alcohol warmth.

UPDATED: FEB 8, 2010 Kona Brewing on Oahu: Creamy and full textured. Awesome caramel and toffee flavors. Sweetened nuts and fresh bread, too. Nice level of hops. Kona Brewing on the Big Island: 2007 vintage on draft - super nice and tasty. Very rich malts, with only a mild bitterness, yet surprisingly decent aromas. Complex with high alcohol that was hidden well. Tasty stuff. 2007 vintage sampled at the brewery Nov. 2009: Lusciously creamy. Big toffee. Lesser elements of chocolate and coffee, with subtle hints of caramel-coated nuts. Rich and flavorful, yet delicate and nuanced.

UPDATED: SEP 22, 2006 I had this on tap at their Koko Marine location 2006 vintage. Good flavor, with a little bit of a kick, but finished with a nice after taste.

2003 GABF: Sweet malts, dark fruit and brown sugar in the nose, full smooth texture, starts sweet and then gets more sweet. Long aftertaste that is more than welcome to stay around.

02.19.05 2002 on tap at Toronado BWF Pretty dark brew but flat looking and feeling. Nice balance but nothing special. Alcohol was very present to me, especially for a 2002 beer, but that added to a nice peppery finish. It was a long day. Some peach, some citrus.

Tap of the 2002 vintage @ Toronado 2005 barley wine festival. Dark reddish brown color with a light brown head. A big caramel malt flavor with vanilla accents.

Auburn brown with a barely there head. Caramel, dark fruits, a bit of spice, lots of hints of interesting things swirling around in there. Why am I trying to figure out what they are instead of just watching the fire dance on the tiki torch?
