Bottle. Pours black with a spare fizzy light brown head, mostly diminishing, spare lacing. Aroma is harsh malt (coffee), light hops (grass) and light yeast (dough). Medium bodied, oily texture, soft carbonation and a metallic finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness and bitterness, light acidity; mineral notes.

Draft at the Buckhouse Steak and Roadhouse Restaurant in Winters, California. This wasn’t exactly a porter in my opinion but much more like a stout. In fact it was very much like an oatmeal stout, very comparable to a Schlafly oatmeal stout. It poured like old engine oil and had a roasted oatmeal aroma and flavor. It was pretty hearty and satisfying but it didn’t really stand out from the crowd.

12oz bottle: Dark black, nearly opaque color with almost non-existant light tan head. Aroma has fair amount of roasted coffee, bit of burned dark chocolate, ash. Flavor has bit of coffee and milk chocolate, with touch of vanilla and bit of highly kilned malts. Finish is mildly sweet.

Bottle from Ledgers; Mose of cpffee?, chocolate, and some roastiness. Dark cherry brown with a small tan head; flavor of coffee?, cocoa, with a tiny smidgeon of hop bitterness. Only big drawback was that it was kind of watery. Good coffee porter.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 kitschy (326) - Nebraska, USA - FEB 20, 2007
in bottle. if there ever was a coffee beer so well made a non-coffee drinker would enjoy it... this is the one. looks like coffee, smells like coffee, tastes like coffee. and not boring coffee. delicious shade-grown, perfectly roasted coffee. are there hops here? probably. malt? probably chocolate. what’s missing is the rest of breakfast - this beer screams to be consumed with grits, bacon, toast, and eggs.

In the bottle from Wilbur’s. Pours reddish black with a thin beige head. Roasted coffee and chocolate aroma. Nut-filled roasted flavor that is not too acidic from the coffee. Pretty lacing. Body a bit light, but medium carbonatio works well with the palate. Fairly sweet finish, but otherwise quick.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 hayduke (2963) - Eureka, California, USA - FEB 19, 2007
UPDATED: MAR 10, 2007 From a bottle poured a very dark brown tending toward black with a fat tan head. Big nose of coffee, chocolate, and dark roasted grains. Mouthfeel medium with an oily coffee bean texture, and flavor is not nearly as powerful as the aroma. This is not bad stuff, and as a porter is decent, even if not quite in the top tier. Re-rate: I had this again last night, and this time a little warmer. Improves the flavor, and so improves the rating a little.

12 oz. bottle from AJ’s Fine Foods - Pours a clear brown color with a 3/4 finger thick light tan head. Light spotty lacing. Aroma is coffee and roasted malt. Flavor is also coffee and roasted malt with a touch of bitter-sweet chocolate. Medium body with a slightly bitter palate. Not too bad for a coffee beer. Just not a real big fan of them. Worth a try.
