this poured on the black side of brown with a small tan head. aroma is packed with spent coffee grounds, earthy maltiness and a bit of brown sugar. the flavor is mildly woody, earthy and spot on the right amount of coffee beans. as it warms, it picks up some lacto qualities. nice roasty acidity on the finish. coffee and chocolate linger on my palate for a while. medium bodied with a creamy mouth feel as the carbonation builds up on my tongue.

From a 12-oz. bottle--Poured a rich and deep brown-black body with a fluffy medium whitish head. Body was crisp and robust. Big coffee flavor. Roasted and chocolaty. Earthy and dry in the finish. Decent but not spectacular.

Very rich Kona coffee taste with sweet hints of chocolate. Not my favorite porter, not close, but enjoyable and pleasently suprising for my first hawaiian beer

Kona Brewing, a common sight in any of the ABC stores that plague the Hawaiian Islands (and Las Vegas, apparently), has made some extremely dissapointing beer. The Pale Ale and Lager were almost undrinkable - shocking for a microbrewery, even a bad one. But when I first laid eyes on their Kona Coffee offering I was prepared to forgive them. To a lay drinker it seems entirely too difficult to ruin and squander the distinct flavors of Hawaii’s famous coffee beans. I had confidence in Kona’s tack, believing that, even though the first two beers of theirs I sampled were really, really bad, surely they’d give the kona flavor the respect it deserves. Oops. As a consolation prize the folks at Kona Brewing make a deep and engaging aroma, but you’re out of luck when it comes to the taste. Let’s start with the positive. Peas, grease (the neglected food group), root vegetables, ginger, sassafras, soy sauce and anise all bounce around on a big, bulging mattress of coffee aroma. It’s like pub food fare meets Asian garnishing, offering an unheard of aromatic experience. It is only in the taste that calamity occurrs. Odd, too, since the deep, rich brown of the body evinces an equally flavor, to all perceptions. Imagine a bag of malts chaff, cheap coffee grounds and the contents of an overused ash tray mixed into a terrible soup with mineral water as the base. And there you have the Kona Brewing pipeline’s flavor. The taste is so unappealing that I can’t finish the beer, and so with a curt drinking experience, a curt review.

Tallahassee, Fl. - Fresh Market - 12 oz bottle - surprise find. Dark brown and purplish pour with a quickly fading light khaki head. Pleasant powdered cocoa aroma with hints of roasted coffee. Chocolaty flavor with hints of coffee, potting soil, very earthy. Finishes with a licorice-like sweet aftertaste. Average mouthfeel. Overall, much better than expected.

pours a midnight black with a touch of ruby, small tan head that doesn’t feel like staying around. smell is burnt coffee, roasted malts, touch of cocoa. taste is coffee, coffee and more coffee, nice creamy mouth-feel, don’t taste any cocoa as i would expect, bit tanginess on the back-end but not really a bitter. not to impressed with this one.

Poured close to black with a nice beige head. Aroma, as you’d expect is of coffee. Taste is smooth but the addition of coffee has been overdone. The trick is to add unusual flavors gently so they don’t overwhelm the beer. The folks at Kona have a long way to go to perfect this artform. Even the finish tastes more like cold coffee than a porter.

Aroma has a nice dry coffee scent in it. Color is good deep black with a slight purple tone. Carbonation is low with a nice thin tight head. Taste is clean and coffee like. Starting with a medium body it goes down smooth. Finish comes on with a nice coffee flavor that is roasted and smooth. This turns sweet for a moment then ends clean with an after taste that fads in with a dry feel of tasted coffee. This is a very good coffee flavored Porter that would be great on a nice winter day.

Draught, Archer Ale House
More or less black with dark brown head. Coffeeish nose with a hint of chocolate. Beaniness leads, definitely vegetal but this is tampered by a warm sugary body. Slight toast and milk chocolate but mostly cozy pale malts. Comforting rainy day brew.

The beer decamps the 12-ounce bottle a rich deep brown to black with sparkling ruby highlights, the moderate creamy light tan head, crowns the glass, upon its demise, the lacing forms a surrounding sheet on the glass. Nose has a deep rich coffee aroma, sweet malt and chocolate back it up superbly, Start has a pleasing roasted grain presence, sweet with a nice twang at the back, top is light to moderate in feel to the palate. Finish as a beneficent acidity, the hops delectable, and the coffee like taste carries to the slightly bitter dry end, a fine porter, quite a nice drinking beer this one.
