4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours an opaque dark brown-black, with light tan head that quickly dissipates. Some lacing of the beer, but not too viscous. Smell is of coffee, but more sweet than burnt. Beer tastes mainly of coffee, with some roasted malt in the background. Other flavors such as chocolate and caramel are also present but way in the background. It’s the coffeeness of this beer that takes center stage. Some flavor of alcohol in the aftertaste, but not too overpowering. Palate is very pleasant, with thickness appropriate for a porter. Has a creaminess with some slight accompanying effervescence. Overall, this may be one of the best coffee-based beers I’ve ever tried (and I’ve had many). Credit goes to the porter, which doesn’t have the burnt taste that can mar some coffee-flavored beers. Excellent beer.

Tap. Dark brown pour. Coffee, roast, dark chocolate. A lot of coffee. Lightly acidic medium body. Well balanced beer. Better coffee than many coffee brews

Transfer from BA review on 12-6-12-
Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – Served a deep brown colored brew with a nice two finger cream head. The head was creamy and light, with it fading relatively fast to leave a great level of lacing.
Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a roasted malt smell. Mixed with these smells are some light coffee as well as some light dark chocolate.
Taste – The taste begins of a nice smooth roasted malt flavor. There is not too much sweetness up front. As the taste moves on some light chocolate and coffee flavors accompanied by some caramel sweetness come to the tongue. More toward the end a light bitter flavor and more roast come to the tongue along with a toasted nut taste. In the end a rather dry roasted flavor is left to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The mouthfeel begins light but creamy only to become more biting at the end as the carbonation seems to come to fruition while in your mouth. Rather interesting and fairly nice for the flavor profile of the beer.
Overall – While not the most robust porter out there it was a decent more session like porter. A little more sweet flavor and body may have been better for the brew,

On draught at Kona Brewing Co. Black color with tan head. Aroma is coffee beans, dark chocolate, and roasted malt. Taste has notes similar to the aroma, but more sweet caramel notes. Good amount of coffee that is balanced well.

Lots of coffee in this to be sure. Pours black without much head or lacing. Some roast. Finishes bitter. Bottle.

It pours quite dark with a brown/black color and an average size tan head. The head hangs on well and make nice slippery lace on the glass. The aroma is sweet like brown sugar with some roasted and toasted notes as well. Hop notes are very light and subdued. Its flavor has mellow hints of brown sugar, roasted barley, burnt wood, and roasted coffee with cream. The finish comes quickly with some mellow spicy hops and solid dark roasted coffee notes fading off the tongue. It is a light to medium body porter with a creamy texture and lively carbonation.

Well, I love coffee. I love Hawaiian coffee. Porters too. What? They all fit the bill in this here beer? Don’t mind me then, don’t mind if I do! I wonder why this isn’t classified as a Stout by Kona, so dark brown, a creamy light tan top and coffee-ish, dark roasty malts and burnt bread and marshmallows too. Very light hop bitterness finishes the package off. Pretty one dimensional but that dimension is coffee and there seems to be a lot of dark beer and coffee lover crossover. Surf’s up!

As expected, very big coffee flavor and aroma. Nice chocolate and roasted backbone. Only downside is not the most complex, but very tasty.

In a word: coffee. Nothing more and nothing less.
Coffee dominate the nose and pretty much the whole flavor.
Almost no body and really not much more to it.
Once was enough for me.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 10/20
Deep brown nearly black pour with ring of beige head. Aroma of roasty robust chocolate, a little wet dog as it warmed. Lively cabronation, viscous creamy mouthfeel, finish leaves the mouth a bit numb. Straightforward chocolate maltiness, an effervescence similar to spearmint, a little watery. Okay but nothing outstanding, a little watery.

Probably the best offering from Kona. Big roasted Kona coffee aroma on the nose, with a little cocoa. On the palate, coffee and cocoa are the two big players, with a nice little floral hop note sneaking in.
