Limited release. Swimming in a fresh water pool at the base of a cascading waterfall is what we all imagine we would find in paradise. On Maui, follow the old Hana Highway and you will find such a place – Wailua Falls. This plunging cascade of clear water is the inspiration for our Limited Release Wailua Wheat. This golden, sun colored ale has a bright, citrusy flavor that comes from the tropical passion fruit we brew into each batch. Sit back, relax and enjoy paradise anytime.

Editor’s Note: Lilikoi Wheat was renamed to Wailua Wheat (both on draft and in bottle).

Pours with a rocky, white head with a slightly yellow body. Aroma is of wheat and passionfruit. Taste is pretty bittere. There is not nearly enough passionfruit in the taste.

this beer pours a golden yellow with a medium white head that dissipates fairly quickly leaving a little lacing down the sides. The initial aromas are definitely passionfruit! It was a little odd. Almost smelled bad. The flavors are exactly the same as the smell, wheat and passionfruit. Not quite sure why, but this beer does not work. The flavors do not go well together at all... I was really expecting something exciting but this one missed the boat... Maybe there was too much pssionfruit? not sure but I won’t get this one again. Cheers!

Purchased 12 oz bottle in ABC store in Honolulu Harbor (about 100 steps from the Aloha tower). Golden-green hazy body with a small white head. Smells sweet, fresh sugar, white wine, fresh fruit. Not much carbonation. Tate is fruity sweet, soft and tangy with mango, peach/passion fruit sweetness on top of wheat. The fruit component doesn’t seem artificial or contrived. Good drinking beer with a soft palate. Underneath cap is a Hawaiian lesson = "lolo" = crazy.

If you like wine coolers(which I don’t), then you’ll love this beer. It’s got some taste to it, but maybe a little too much. The first sip you have will leave you with an interesting feeling. Too much passion fruit taste. It doesn’t feel like a beer.

UPDATED: FEB 13, 2010 This reminded me of a can of Hawaiian punch. Clear, bubbly, fruity, unremarkable. Had on tap in a re-rate at the brewery. Passion fruit/hallertauer hops. Hazy, yellow, nice, big passion fruit nose. Tropical refreshing fruity palate, but not overwhelming. One of the better fruit beers I have had. Summary - wow those are 2 disconnected and divergent ratings on two tries!

12 oz. bottle, six-pack from Keils Grocery. Clear light orange color with a small white head. Fairly light, wheaty and fruity nose, tropical flowers and light herby notes. Sweet and tart summer fruits, apricot, clover honey, floral hops, wheat and of course passionfruit. Light to medium body, gently prickly carbonation. Summer refresher.

12 Oz Bottle. My first Hawaiian beer and my last of 2007. Awkward aroma of salted, stale passionfruit paste, light miso, and stewed barley. A lightly intriguing interplay between the dusty floor malt and the sprightly, sour passionfruit. Pours a strikingly clear gold, no head. Flavor moves between stale bread, guava candy, and moderately bitter herbal seeds. Nondescript. Fruit doesn’t significantly impact the mediocre jist of the lightly sour, dusty, bland, a weakly hopped wort. Hops retain light gumminess. Finishes surprisingly clean. For a wheat beer with fruit added, it’s a pretty good pale lager. In the end, it’s kind of like me on this New Year’s Eve, bitter and bored. Finishes on light cream donut. Thanks for the hookup, Sean!

I got this beer on tap at the brewery while I was on vacation there. This is a wheat beer with passion fruit (lilikoi) added at the end of the mash. The passion fruit is apparent in both the aroma and the taste. It pours a straw colored beer with a white head. As mentioned before, the aroma is dominated by the passion fruit. The taste also has good passion fruit flavor, but not as strongly as the aroma. There are also wheat flavors and a good tartness to balance the fruit. It drinks very smoothly and has a light to medium body. This would be an excellent warm weather session beer for anyone who likes slightly fruity beers.

On-tap, served in a standard bar pint glass. Poured a hazy pale straw yellow with an frothy white head that slowly settled into a thin sudsy lacing, light amount of sticky lace at the brim of the glass. I could smell the passion fruit as the bartender brought the pint over to where I was sitting, bright and fresh smelling, mainly the plump pulp of the passion fruit, a unique sweet and sourness. Faint malt backing of crackery wheat. The passion fruit is a bit more laid back in the taste, just a splash of juice, mildly tart and sweet, mixing nicely with the wheat malts. The wheat malts are dry saltine cracker-like. This has the light bodied feel one would expect for this type of wheat ale, quite easy to consume. Finishes dry with passion fruit juice flavor being pushed aside by the wheat grainy crackers. I liked this fruity wheat ale from Kona, went well with the club sandwich I had for lunch today.
