COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Limited release. Swimming in a fresh water pool at the base of a cascading waterfall is what we all imagine we would find in paradise. On Maui, follow the old Hana Highway and you will find such a place – Wailua Falls. This plunging cascade of clear water is the inspiration for our Limited Release Wailua Wheat. This golden, sun colored ale has a bright, citrusy flavor that comes from the tropical passion fruit we brew into each batch. Sit back, relax and enjoy paradise anytime.

Editor’s Note: Lilikoi Wheat was renamed to Wailua Wheat (both on draft and in bottle).

Draft at the brewpub 11/2/2006. Like described a unique hefe. Aroma is mild and fairly typical for the style, as is the appearance. All goes to spec until you taste it. The flavor is not overwhelming but has interesting sweet and sour notes, citrusy fruit is evident, and it is slightly bitter. Fairly light bodied, crisp and tart in the mouth.

UPDATED: SEP 8, 2008 Though not reflected in my score, this beer gets points for being unique and the embodiment of Hawai’i. This beer somehow manages to integrate the sensuous flavor of liliko’i. Somewhat sweet with a bit of sourness. The fruit is evident in both the aroma and the taste. Definitely give it a try. it’s light and fruity to be sure, but a one-of-a-kind experience nonetheless.

Draft at brewery: Hazy gold hue. Light body; decent carbonation. Pale malts and a very mild bitterness. Nice elements/aromas of tea, soda, lemon, flowers, and passion fruit. Pinch of tartness. Light and refreshing "tropical" beer. Boring and predictable in some ways, but it had some interesting things going on, and it was made pretty well (i.e., no major off-flavors).

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2007 Re-rate from bottle.
Beer is clear, medium bright yellow with a tiny, frothy, off-white mostly, rapidly and totally diminishing head.
Nose is malty with light notes of toasted grain/wheat toast, biscuit; Hoppy with a light resinous herb, tropical floral notes; Moderate-heavy note of genuine lilikoi, light supporting note of pineapple. Good melding of beer and fruit. Neither dominates nor clashes.
Flavor is light/moderately sweet, lightly acidic/juicy, lightly bitter with a longer-than-average lightly acidic/juicy dry, lightly bitter, trace/lightly sweet finish.
The body is light, the texture is watery and the carbonation is lively.
Very enjoyable.

On tap at the brewery in Kona. To me, this one gets a lot of credit for being unique and being able to pull it off. The passion fruit flavor is not overdone, the wheat and light spice is blended in well. Quite an enjoyable, refreshing creation.

Tis is a great beer. They hit the mark for a hot day I would drink this beer. The Wheat in the beer helped the fruity flavor and the nice soft colors where great. They did not go for the high alcohol which was pleasant to me. Great job and I want more beer please.

Sweet malt aroma. Couldn’t smell any wheat though. Cloudy, dark yellow. Busy carbonation. Decent lace. Distinct mango flavor, though done tastefully. A little sour and thin. But, the mango makes this a very Hawaiian beer. I can’t believe I am the 1st Ratebeerian to rate this brew in 16 months. I realize there are virtually only two places on earth where you can get this brew (KBC’s brewpubs on Oahu and the Big Island) but is it that rare for a Ratebeerian to visit the islands?

UPDATED: SEP 8, 2013 Golden, clear maize beer. Stark lemonade-like aroma followed likewise with a sweet limey-lemon flavor. Tart and sharp. Sounds weird, but I liked this unique beer. Good light fruity beer.

UPDATED: JUN 27, 2007 Bottle. Head is small, frothy/fizzy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is light to medium yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly hoppy (flowers), lightly yeasty (basement), with light notes of lemon, metal shavings, and random tropical fruit. Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Very little added fruit character and kind of metallic in the nose, but reasonably refreshing/balanced.

of the beers sampled this was a favorite. All beers made by this brewery are drinkable. Nice grainy nose and a decent bite, quite fresh and clean.
