3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Nevele (9) - - SEP 1, 2012A great black IPA on tap at The Scratch in Brisbane. Very dark of colour, full of flavour, slight taste of roastiness, and a great bittersweet aftertaste.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 ComradeK (732) - Blue Mountains, AUSTRALIA - MAY 19, 2013
330ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a large light beige head, which lasts well and leaves good lacing. Strawberry, kiwifruit and lime hops provide a fruity kick to the aroma, with resin hops, roasty malt and black coffee providing backing. Potent lime and kiwifruit hops up front segue into a more resinous hop flavour. Bitter black coffee and cocoa notes combine with resin in the body, with lime hops reappearing in the finish and lingering, along with strawberry, in the aftertaste. This is a seriously good black IPA, and one of the best Australian beers I have had for quite a while.
3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Unm4rk3d (30) - Bowen Hills, AUSTRALIA - APR 17, 2013
@scratch. This has a lovely taste to it, somewhat fruity and light sour. If the aroma would invoke a stronger sense and If it didn’t feel so light on the palate it perhaps would not be an IPA.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 stoutnick (164) - Brisbane, AUSTRALIA - APR 16, 2013
Murky brown colour. Aroma is metallic hops. Taste is the same with some mild bitterness and very mild roastiness. The palate of bitter malt lingers. Overall, not one of my favourite Black IPAs, but definitely fits category rather than the bulk, which are hoppy porters.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 RichardHFish (10) - - APR 13, 2013
Bottle, The Burrow, West End, QLD. A great example of a black IPA, jet black, even when held to the light. Great aroma, filled with the coffee and slightly burnt notes that fit the colour. Taste half matches the aroma, but has spicy and floral flavours permeating through, which are nicely matched to the malt body. The abv sits nicely in with the flavour profile. Overall, awesome beer!
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 jmgreenuk (1280) - The Hague, NETHERLANDS - FEB 17, 2013
Bottle at Taps Beer Bar, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a dark mahogany colour with a thin tan head and a little lace. The aroma is grassy and floral leading to a medium bitter, hoppy, dry pepper flavour. Much of the grass and pepper ended up on the palate and stayed around in the aftertaste. One of the best black IPA’s I’ve ever had and one of the best beers from Kooinda.
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 Pyobon (728) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - JAN 29, 2013
(Bottle) Black with dense milk coffee colorued head. Pleasant aroma: mainly pine with biscuity malty hints in the background. Smooth velvety mouthfilling from plentiful fine carbonation and fairly full body. Flavour starts off surprisingly light and refreshing for such a dark beer and then steadily develops richer stronger tastes. There are berry notes in the start, then coffee and chocolate and dark toffee develop strongly and transform into a really nice long bitter finish - a pleasant and assertive bitterness without being aggressive. A really good black IPA.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 CitrusP (47) - Newcastle, AUSTRALIA - JAN 6, 2013
Poured a deep almost gluggy black with a small holding white head. Deep aromas of chocolate, cocoa, and dark fruit, hints of grassy hops. Flavour is similar, big hit of rich, dark chocolate/chocolate mousse with only a hint of grassy hops. Palate is cleaned up by the very bitter and almost abrasive Sauvin hops. more grassiness and a little pine. Really interesting and big flavours for the ABV.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 varanid99 (244) - AUSTRALIA - DEC 19, 2012
Black pour with pale tan, thick head. Pine, tropical fruits and roasted malt on the nose. Sweetish, winey taste up front, smoky, pine, and then a little coffee and good bitter finish.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 jonnyguns (384) - - DEC 3, 2012
Tap at local tap house. Pours a black with a tanned head. Aromas of roasted espresso, hops, tropical fruit notes and a bit of chocolate. Taste is quite sweet with the Nelson sauvin coming through more evidently. More espresso hops and a subtle malty finish. Pretty nice stuff

Jet black color, reasonably dense almond colored head. Good malt aroma and flavour with a solid hop finish.
