2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
On draught @ Sail & Anchor, Fremantle.
Blackened shade of brown in the glass and seemingly opaque. Head is well retained; a dense, creamy tan mass that leaves a thin lace. Pine resin and camphor dominates the nose. Undertones of dusty chocolate malt, stripped pinewood and rose petal come through as does an edge of very bitter herbs like wormwood. Creamy and meaty on the palate are as good as it got personally. There is a rough dark wood and smoke flavour that is swallowed whole by way too much pinewood. Camphorous like spraying insect killer into oneís mouth. Weedy and herbally acrid leaving the palate stripped of all feeling. I tried to like this but failed miserably. I expected esters of berries, citrus fruits; even a little sweet bubblegum, toffee or chocolate, something. I will for sake of argument give it another go. ButÖ.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
A distinctly Australasian take on the black IPA using Nelson Sauvin hops. I have a soft spot for this one because it was the first black IPA I ever tried, back when the concept was an oddity that seemed unlikely to catch on. Be warned that the bottles tend to be gentle gushers - Iíve worn a few at the Australian Hotel over the years. Short in the head but the stamina is good. Lovely aroma of tropical fruits dipped in chocolate. In the mouth, itís dry and ashy at the front of the palate and minty and quenching at the back. Lots of fruity acids. Milo, grape juice, Oz-style cab sav with eucalypt mintiness, Something in this sets the phlegm rising. Carries its 7% abv very easily. Drier than I remembered - perhaps a tad too much - but still a good íun. (330ml bottle from Leura Cellars)

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
330 ml bottle from Plonk. Pours dark brown almost black, bubbly head. Big hop aroma, flavour is roastey and dark then the hops kick in. Has that distinct Nelson sauvin hop taste, aroma, and slight sourness. Nice.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Near-opaque deep brown body, holds a tight beige head.
Pungent aroma of hops; passionfruit, guava, gooseberry, citrus peel, grass, nutty, toasty, lightly roasted coffee malt underneath.
Full body, moderately high carbonation, certainly doesnít seem as strong as it is!
Smack bang more hops on the body - guava & lychee, grapefruit & grass, espresso & cocoa. High bitterness dries out the finish.
Solid, very solid!

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
330ml bottle from XO Cellars in Noosa Junction. Poors dark with nice creamy head and lovely fruity aroma. You can really taste the Nelson Sauvin hops and just the right malt backbone making this such a smooth and easy to drink Black IPA. Nice bitterness on the palate that lingers and creeps up on you. Great beer and quite possibly Kooindas best.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
330mL bottle. Pours opaque black with a thick off-white head that never diminished. Faint aroma of chocolate and resinous hops. Coffee and chocolate in the flavour, a little wood, not very hoppy, medium bitterness, mild sweetness. Medium body, soft carbonation and a lingering woody finish.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Great beer. Seems to me to have a maltier backing than most BIPA, and itís a welcome observation, as far as Iím concerned. Theres the usual fruitburst aroma that is part and parcel for Nelson Sauvin hops, and then the wonderful chocolatey, velvet backbone with lashings of hops and sweet fruit.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle (33cl) at Tipplers Tap, Brisbane, August 2014. Black with a tan head. Aroma and taste of roasted malt, grapefruit, dark chocolate and coffee. The finish was rather bitter. A descent one.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aroma dominated by burnt malt toffee character. Great black opaque colour topped by good creamy lasting head. Taste is dominated by black beer burnt character. Palate is clean with some residual burnt malt at back of mouth that dissipates quickly. Overall a pleasant black beer, but not much of the hops advertised in IPA name. Possibly a little too much of burnt character without a lot of other depth of flavour.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Aromas of espresso, spicy hops. Jet-black with a thick, creamy tan head. Lively carbonation, sticky body with quite a bit of sediment apparent. Flavours of prunes, soy sauce, a hint of treacle. Savoured this one- a very nice black beer.
