ComradeK (992) - The Vale of Dundas, - MAY 19, 2013
330ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a large light beige head, which lasts well and leaves good lacing. Strawberry, kiwifruit and lime hops provide a fruity kick to the aroma, with resin hops, roasty malt and black coffee providing backing. Potent lime and kiwifruit hops up front segue into a more resinous hop flavour. Bitter black coffee and cocoa notes combine with resin in the body, with lime hops reappearing in the finish and lingering, along with strawberry, in the aftertaste. This is a seriously good black IPA, and one of the best Australian beers I have had for quite a while.

norkle (14) - - MAY 22, 2014
Aroma dominated by burnt malt toffee character. Great black opaque colour topped by good creamy lasting head. Taste is dominated by black beer burnt character. Palate is clean with some residual burnt malt at back of mouth that dissipates quickly. Overall a pleasant black beer, but not much of the hops advertised in IPA name. Possibly a little too much of burnt character without a lot of other depth of flavour.

Poured from a bottle in Cairns, AUS. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of toasted nuts and some weedy notes. Flavors of tobacco and licorice. Not much hop character. Bitter, roasty finish.

Bottle. Aromas of espresso, spicy hops. Jet-black with a thick, creamy tan head. Lively carbonation, sticky body with quite a bit of sediment apparent. Flavours of prunes, soy sauce, a hint of treacle. Savoured this one- a very nice black beer.

Murky dark brown appearance with a solid tan head. There is an initial woody taste with burnt coffee and dark malt flavours. Progress into dark fruits and grapefruit and finishes with some citrus and resin. A dry, strong hop finish. Very nice

Fare thee well Josh tasting at Bruce’s. Thanks to Colin and big Dave. Opaque black - brown beer, good pale tan head. Palate is airy and semi dry. Mild fine carbonation. Light dry dark malt bearing.a good coffee streak. Mild dark fruits, tangy. Spot of lactose. Bitterish finish. Okay but could do with more hop flavour.

Bottle shared at Josh’s Farewell Hoorah - thanks to Wingmanwillis for plundering this one for me, 20/02/14. Murky dark mahogony brown with a moderate light tan swirl atop the glass. Nose is earthy, dank hops, light cocoa, jammy berry fruits, spice, light roast. Taste comprises light dirt, touch of tropicals, cocoa, bitter grapefruit, earthy. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi dry close. So so CDA, pretty basic.

Scopey (6321) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - FEB 20, 2014
Bottle thanks to Dave/Colin. It pours murky deep brown with a medium tan head. The nose is dirt, earth, roasted malt, toast, chocolate and brown bread. The taste is roasted malt, toast, mild acidity, coffee, burnt notes, dark fruits and bitter citrus with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Alright Black IPA.

Bottled at Cookie, Melbourne, Victoria. Near black, small head. Chocolate, coffee and grapefruit up front. Mid sweet with above medium body and rounded mouthfeel. Bold and heavy with chocolate, resin and caramel. Resiny finish, Big, bold and relatively unrefined.

Pours nicely, reasonable head retention. Nice black colour, however choice of hops lets it down a little bit, detracting from the flavour slightly.

5/XII/13 - 33cl bottle @ home - BB: n/a (2013-1118) Thanks to Bo for transporting the bottle!

Clear deep dark brown beer, creamy irregular beige head, pretty stable, little adhesive. Aroma: lots of chocolate, caramel, dried fruits, bit of mocha, sweet malts. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: citric start, mocha, dark chocolate, pretty bitter hops, sourish touch. Aftertaste: very hoppy, bitter, bit sweet, somewhat sourish, mocha and coffee, cocoa powder, dry ending. Again, a very nice Aussie!
