Since April 1991, the Köstritzer black beer brewery, a subsidiary of the Bitburger brewery, has emerged as of one of the most modern breweries in Thuringia. In September 1993, it was with great pride we (re-) introduced the "original Köstritzer black beer".

The aroma of the brew is muted, lightly malty. The appearance is not quite black but certainly dark brown; the head is adequate and lingers. The taste is true to style, quite malty and displaying a long finish. I think this is very much a baseline sort of schwarzbier, as it is good and representative of the style but there are better offerings.

DWG; Pours dark brown to black with a creamy, medium lasting, lacing off-white to tan head. Nose is roasted malty, light smokey, caramel, light dark fruity and metallic. Taste is moderate sweet and light bitter. Body is light, texture is thin, carbonation is soft.

500ml bottle from Appellation Wines, shared with jeevan. Pours clear brown, thin, swiftly vanishing head. Aromas of grass and light milk chocolate. Some light fruitiness. Taste is somehow less than this. Thin and disappointing.

Pours dark, with nice big head. Aroma is roasty. Beer is dry, with soft bitterness from roasted malts. A good beer, worth buying in substitution for any eurolager, because it is quite easy to buy in normal grocery shops, but it is nothing special to be honest

500ml bottle. Ruby red glowing, quasi black colour with average to huge, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Minimally grainy, roasty dark malty aroma, a cautious touch of malt lozenge. Taste is dry, roasty dark malty, minimally grainy, subtle sweetness, a touch of rock sugar, malt lozenge. This has been my "custom beer" for some years and has additionally the merit of first making me familiar with the Schwarzbier-style as a typical east-German style short after Germany’s reunification. Desisting from the fact that it is full of memories, I think it’s still a nice beer - especially if bearing in mind, that it is a brand of the big industrial brewers.

Bottle. The beer is delicate and smooth, maybe even too delicate. Aroma of roasted malt. Light bitterness. Ok, but not very special.

This is the best of the German Black Beers (Schwarzbier). I drank it frequently when I lived in Thuringia in 2003. Aroma is not so noticeable, but that is the point of this beer. Appearance is nearly black, in a large mug one can tell it isn’t totally black, but in a stange or tulip glass, it appears black. Taste is malty with a slight hop bitterness. The palate is mostly clean, no noticeable cloying. This is a great lager best served around 40 degrees F (4 degrees C), it tastes decent at room temperature as well, but loses most of its character if served ice cold..

Bottle 0,50L. Dark brown colour with small, light brown head that dissippate fast. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, dark chocolate - kinda malty aroma. Taste starts light sweet with lively carbonation mouthfeel and finished light bitter. Light to medium body, watery beer. Very average...

Poured from a 500ml can. Opaque black with a thin but lasting head. Weak aroma of honey. Taste of honey and roasted malts with a bitter finish. Fizzy and medium bodied.
