Since April 1991, the Köstritzer black beer brewery, a subsidiary of the Bitburger brewery, has emerged as of one of the most modern breweries in Thuringia. In September 1993, it was with great pride we (re-) introduced the "original Köstritzer black beer".

Looks black, with spongy head, medium retention and lacing.

Nose is composed of caramel, bread, nuts with some toasty notes, resiny and herby hoppy aromas can also be traced. Some licorice as well.

Taste is medium sweet, medium bitter and lightly sour, while flavor is mostly nutty and bready.

Interesting beer with pretty dry, hoppy and earthy palate (german hops mostly, metallic, but not any Fe2+ dissolved)

Overall - interesting schwarzbier, would go well with some rich meats or chocolate cake.
Paired with steak after the degustation, was delicious.

VALIS (222) - Nashua, New Hampshire, USA - JUN 3, 2014
Smells especially nice, very bready and sweet, with caramel and dates as well. Pours a nice medium to dark brown, light carbonation and head. Tastes fresh and clean. Not heavy but also not at all weak or flavorless. Just a solid, drinkable beer. Would do well with spicy or salty meat.

Pours a very dark brown color with a short-lived dark khaki head. Nose is akin to freezer burn. Full body. Metal flavor invades the ripe fruit.

From a bottle. Pours almost black with a tiny off white head, mild aroma of Vegemite and coffee, hints of chocolate linger. Smooth and rich, not too bad at all.

Bottle. Pours deep black with ruby highlights. Aroma of roasted malt, molasses, toasty. Taste is quite dry and crisp with a lot of black malt flavour. Firm bitterness with slight hops and lots of black malt.

Tap at the Old German Beerhouse, Bangkok. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin off-white head. The aroma is roasted malt, sweet treacle toffee. The flavour is medium sweet light bitter with a watery earthy mineral sugar malt palate. Light bodied with soft carbonation. I drank this in Thailand as a "premium beer". I think it should have stayed in Germany!
