COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Seit April 1991 ist die Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei ein 100% iges Tochterunternehmen der Bitburger Brauerei Th. Simon.

Since April 1991, the Köstritzer black beer brewery, a subsidiary of the Bitburger brewery, has emerged as of one of the most modern breweries in Thuringia. In September 1993, it was with great pride we (re-) introduced the "original Köstritzer black beer".

Draft at Frankford Hall. Pours a deep brown, near black, with some off white head and lace. Notes of roasted malts, some sweet fruity notes. Average mouthfeel and carbonation. Pretty good for a schwarzbier.

330ml bottle, Zum Anker Rudesheim, Germany. Poured a nearly opaque black with a red tint with a thin beige coloured bubble head that retained OK and laced OK. Aroma subtly of roasted grain. Taste of very sweet malt followed by slight roasted grain as well as molasses. Light to medium body, lighter than expected for a dark beer. Fairly smooth sweet finish. Quite nice.

Drought. Dark brown with small spongy beige head, no specific aroma, you can taste coffee beans in the background, average carbonation, abrupt finish. Not bad but not special either.

UPDATED: APR 27, 2013 Very dark with medium head. Aroma is medium intensive with some dark malts. Taste is nothing special, some dark malts and coffee notes. Texture is rather watery. Finish is medium. Average beer, I?ve expected much more.

From a bier shop in Berlin. Very little, if any aroma. This also has some stout qualities. Though not as strong as The bock bier. A bit weak in taste.

Dark brown coloured body with a two centimetre tall light tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts, earth and a good bitterness, almost seeming from peat. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong roasted malt flavours with some light sugars, a bit of earth, a hint of spices (nutmeg/cinnamon) and a finish of cream. Aftertaste shows a great balance of flavours with the roasted malt dominating of course, hidden well by the caramelised sugars and a nice spicey feel. Overall, a nice beer that I can’t believe I hadn’t rated yet - but a beer well worth trying - relatively easy to drink, but with a nice complexity and good flavours. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Old Europe restaurant in Washington, DC for US$6.00 today on 23-March-2013.

Schiuma marrone con bolle finissime, poco persistente. In bocca scivola molto, si sente il tostato appena messa in bocca ma dopo sparisce e lascia poco in bocca. Corpo quasi assente.

Köstritzer Schwarzbier is a smooth drinking black beer style that will surprise most dark beer phobes. Schwarzbier pours a very dark black with a fine tan head. Faint aroma of chocolate. Taste is subtle chocolate and coffee flavors with a clean finish. Perfect for drinking with red meat or your favorite German meal. Köstritzer Schwarzbier is one to be enjoyed often.
