Since April 1991, the Köstritzer black beer brewery, a subsidiary of the Bitburger brewery, has emerged as of one of the most modern breweries in Thuringia. In September 1993, it was with great pride we (re-) introduced the "original Köstritzer black beer".

Pours a black/brown color. About one finger slow forming head. Very thin retained head, okay lacing.

Aroma is quite nice. Good medium roasted malts. Smoke, coffee, chocolate. The smoke really stands out in this.

Taste is roasted caramel malts, the smokiness is really coming through. It’s slightly sweet, a little hoppy tartness on the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium light. It’s thin, a little watery, and pretty dry. It’s smooth, and easy drinking. It just takes a while to get there.

Overall, I like it. At first I didn’t, but it slowly grew on me. Yeah, I recommend this. I may not ever buy this again, because I may never see it again, but I will look for other scwarzbiers.

Dark brown. Medium body, moderate flavor, good carbonation, low heat, short length, arid finish. Very dry, moderate bitterness. Light roast flavor. Not my cup of beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330 ml bottle. Pours a clear full brown with a light brown head. Intense malty aroma with some dark bread and decent caramel notes. Velvety medium body with soft carbonation. Soft sweetness with some very faint acidic notes and and low bitterness. The taste is of roasted malts - some caramel, some coffee - but also with hints of fresh fruits.

Dunkelbraun mit beigem Schaum, malzig rauchiges Aroma, Röstmalze, leichte Süße wird von dezentem Hopfen neutralisiert, wenig Kohlensäure, eher flüchtiger Abtrunk

0,33l bottle from Eurospar. Bottle and beer are eyecatcher. Easy drinkable, highly refreshing, pleasantly bitter. Very good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2015 BJCP Category: 8B Schwarzbier

AROMA: Dark roasted malt, but sweet iced coffee scent, too. Familiar lager aroma. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Deep ruby red/mahogany; seemingly black. Body is filtered. Small, tan, foam. 2/3

FLAVOR: Lightly sweet dark malts. Mild bitterness in the background. Finishes with some coffee/roasted malt flavor. Aftertaste does not linger. Not very exciting, but not bad. 13/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body, though texture is a bit watery. Neither crisp nor flat. Smooth. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Seems like a pedestrian Schwarzbier; not bad - just far from great. 6/10

No information about the malts, hops and drinktemperature on the bottle, but nice labels and bottle. A black beer with a nice cappuccino head, wonderful, malty, roasty, bread, light bitter, finish is bread, body is thin, too much water, (I have 0.33l bottle with batch E401V and best-before 04.08.16)
